Hobart Hurricanes to Win

Hobart Hurricanes have won one and lost two from their opening games but were competitive, even in defeat in their last match. They have an excellent batting line-up which can blow teams away when playing at their best. Melbourne Renegades have a 100% record so far in the tournament but had to be rescued from 9-4 in Match 10 and they can not rely upon their lower and middle order in every fixture.

This game should be an excellent contest with both teams on the attack from the first ball of their innings. Although the Hurricanes have had a slower start to the tournament, they have an excellent record in home conditions and have beaten Melbourne Renegades in six of the last seven BBL matches between the teams.

Patrick Dooley to Be Hobart Hurricanes’ Top Wicker Tacker

Only the most ardent BBL fans had heard of left-arm wrist spinner Patrick Dooley ahead of the 2022-23 competition. He had played only one match for Brisbane Heat, returning figures of 0-25 against Hobart Hurricanes. But the Hurricanes must have seen something across those four overs and they have seen him return figures of 1-27, 4-16 and 2-19 in his three games for the franchise.

Dooley is part of an impressive bowling attack for Hobart Hurricanes which includes express pace bowler, Riley Meredith, and Pakistan leg-spinner, Shadab Khan. However, both Meredith and Khan have taken only four wickets so far in the campaign and have not looked anywhere near as penetrative as Dooley. You won’t want to bet against the tournament newcomer picking up another few wickets in this match.

Aaron Finch to Be Melbourne Renegades’ Highest Run Scorer

Last season’s BBL was one to forget for Australia’s T20 skipper who resigned the captaincy of the Renegades half-way through the campaign as they finished bottom of the table for the third successive year. However, he is one of the most experienced players in the history of this competition and sits in second place in the all time BBL run scorers with 2922.

Finch has made an impressive start to this campaign with unbeaten scores of 31 against Brisbane Heat on Wednesday and 70 against Sydney Thunder in Match 7. He has made 25 scores of 50 and above in the BBL and is an excellent choice to hit the most runs for Melbourne Renegades in this match.

Hobart Hurricanes vs Melbourne Renegades BBL Odds

Ahead of this BBL clash between Hobart Hurricanes and Melbourne Renegades at the Bellerive Oval, here’s the latest betting odds for this match up:

  • Hobart Hurricanes to win @ 1.75 (3/4)
  • Melbourne Renegades to win @ 2.15 (23/20)

Although Hobart Hurricanes are four points behind Melbourne Renegades in the BBL table, both of their defeats have come in away fixtures. They have an excellent record when playing at home in Tasmania and that is the reason why the Renegades, who are yet to drop points, come into this match as the underdogs.

Hobart Hurricanes vs Melbourne Renegades BBL Betting Preview

With all teams jostling for positions in these opening contests of the BBL, we expect neither team to take a backward step in this match.

Hobart Hurricanes: Weak Away From Home So Far

The Hurricanes have already returned empty handed from trips to Melbourne and Sydney in this year’s BBL but saw off Perth Scorchers by eight runs in their only fixture on the island of Tasmania. The Hobart supporters have a genuine affinity with their team and they go out of their way to make the Bellerive Oval a tough place for visiting sides.

With a batting line-up which is the envy of many other teams in the competition, many pundits think it is only a matter of time before Hobart Hurricanes start picking up regular wins. Ben McDermott hit consecutive centuries in last year’s tournament on his way to a total of 577 runs, but he is yet to make a score of over 17 in the 2022-23 BBL.

Although the team has failed to pick up points on their early season travels, the form of Patrick Dooley is enough to get the home fans particularly excited about their prospects in this game. He has picked up the wickets of top players and dismissed both Jordan Silk and Dan Christian for ducks in the last game.

Melbourne Renegades: A Transformation in Results

The Renegades had become a bit of a joke in the BBL after picking up only 10 victories from the start of the 2019-20 season. However, their experienced line-up has shown that anything is possible with a fresh start and, at the time of writing, sit joint top of the league with six points from three matches.

Each game has seen a key individual batting performance make the difference for the Renegades. Captain Nic Maddinson stood up with 87 runs from 49 balls in Match 3 against Brisbane Heat before Aaron Finch made 70 not out against Sydney Thunder. On Monday, it was the turn of 34 year old all-rounder, Andre Russell, to delight the crowd with six sixes on his way to 57.

However, it remains to be seen if this over-reliance on one player in each game is a sign that the Renegades are a group of match-winners, or that they are going to fail spectacularly if one of their batters doesn’t deliver a big score. On a surface which will differ from their three previous games, it will be interesting to see how Melbourne Renegades get on with the bat in Hobart.
