Brighton Transfer News: Seagulls snap up Bundesliga star as Mac Allister replacement

Brighton & Hove Albion have quickly looked to replace Alexis Mac Allister and they have completed the signing of a Bundesliga midfielder. This comes only a few days after James Milner joined the Seagulls following the expiration of his contract with Premier League rivals Liverpool.

Manager Roberto De Zerbi has added Borussia Dortmund’s Mahmoud Dahoud to his Brighton roster. The German international has penned a four-year contract at The Amex Stadium and will officially join the club on July 1st, which is when his Dortmund contract expires.

De Zerbi has expressed his delight at being able to bring the 27-year-old to the club, insisting he has been a previous target of his in the past,

“I’m excited to have Mahmoud in my team. I wanted him when I was at Sassuolo and I’m sure he is going to be a top player for us.”

It also becomes the latest player to exit Dortmund this summer after England international Jude Bellingham completed a big money move to La Liga giants Real Madrid.

It is perhaps quite unsurprising to see Dahoud make the switch after struggling for regular game time in the Bundesliga last season. He would only make nine starts for Dortmund, although the departure of Bellingham could have potentially opened the door for more appearances if he did stay around.

However, the lure of Premier League football appears to have done the trick in Brighton getting their man. They too can offer European football as the Seagulls will play in the UEFA Europa League next season, which is the first time the club will be performing in Europe in their entire history.

David Weir, who is technical director at Brighton, said Dahoud is a welcome addition to the squad,

“We’re delighted to bring Mahmoud to the club, his quality and ability will really add to the options available to Roberto.

“He’s a quality player, he’s got lots of experience playing at a high level in Germany with great experience in Europe too.

“We’re looking forward to working with Mahmoud when pre-season starts next month and to seeing him in action in the Summer Series in the United States in July.”

Brighton: What will Dahoud offer?

Dahoud has over 150 appearances of Bundesliga football to his name and whilst this is a new country and new league for him to play in, it shouldn’t take a huge amount of time to adjust. The fact De Zerbi has tried to sign him before means he is likely to slot into the Brighton way of playing quite seamlessly.

Brighton fans may not necessarily see him be a regular goalscorer if his previous endeavors are anything to go by. He has played the vast majority of his career as a central midfielder, but he is capable of slotting into a number ten role, which would certainly increase his chances of scoring more goals.

Not only has Mac Allister departed for Liverpool, but it would appear that Moisés Caicedo might also be heading for the exit door. This would be another big hole that needs fitting, and Dahoud would help do that to a point. More recruits are anticipated, but the addition of Dahoud certainly shows where Brighton are right now as a club. They’re going places.
