The bookies are picking England to win this match easily, but we couldn’t disagree more. Sure, last week’s results, plus their match earlier in pool play both indicate that England are the better team, but that’s not the biggest factor heading into this game.
Energy and motivation levels will be what determines this match. England absolutely emptied the tank against South Africa last week. This means that it’ll be tough for them to get up again for this match, and also, they’ll feel as though they’ve already won the moral victory in many ways by out-performing everyone’s expectations last week.
Argentina, on the other hand, were underwhelming last week, and will be determined to finish their campaign on a high. Unlike England, they do have something to prove. This, plus the inevitable retirement of Augustine Creevy, should see Argentina at least cover the +7 handicap in this game, at the very minimum.

Prediction 2: 37 to 57 points in the match @ 18/25 (1.72)
One of our other Rugby World Cup predictions today is that we will see some looser, freer flowing rugby in the third and fourth place playoff. There’s simply less pressure–bottom line, no-one really cares who wins this game. So expect to see a few moves tried, and the ball chucked around a bit.
That being said, these two sides are not exactly try-scoring machines. Italy were closer to beating the All Blacks in pool play than England were to scoring a try in their semi-final, while Argentina were also held scoreless by the All Blacks. The total points falling between 37 and 57 feels like a fair bet here, given two limited sides will be playing loose rugby.
Prediction 3: Argentina to win by 13+ @ 20/1 (21.00)
This is our slightly more controversial Rugby World Cup tip, but with odds like these, we say it’s worth a bet. As mentioned above, Argentina will be coming into this match with far more to prove than England, and will be more fired up to get a result. There’s every chance that England simply won’t turn up, and will limp into this one.
The same thing happened in 2007 when Argentina played the third and fourth playoff, when they thrashed France 34-10. As did the All Blacks against Wales last World Cup, winning 40-17. A one-sided match here is not at all inconceivable, and with a return of 20/1 (21.00), would net a handy profit.
