England vs Italy Prediction and Odds: Six Nations

England and Italy lost their opening fixtures of the 2023 Six Nations whilst conceding 29 points each. As a result, we expect the defences on both sides to be far stronger and more disciplined in this head to head at Twickenham. Read on to see our rugby predictions for the third fixture in Round 2 of the 2023 Six Nations tournament.

These odds from Ladbrokes were correct at the time of writing.

England vs Italy – Match Prediction

There were positives in defeat for both teams last week but neither team will accept that outcome again in Round 2. We have picked out two tips below.

Total England Points Under 38.5 @ 10/11 (1.91)

Although England racked up 23 points in defeat to Scotland, and Italy are an inferior side to the Scots, we expect a less open performance from the hosts at Twickenham this week.

Emphasis is likely to be on getting the win and points on the board from the boot of the kicker could well be considered less risky than playing a running style.

Italy will also defend stoutly and will not let England get any cheap points. We expect England to get the win but without breaching the 35 point mark.

Total Match Tries Under 7.5 @ 10/11 (1.91)

Roared on by a passionate home support, England may find the temptation of trying to get in behind the Italy defence too much to resist at times, particularly in the opening exchanges. However, with the trusty boot of Owen Farrell on hand, we anticipate seeing plenty of England’s points coming from kicks.

Tommaso Allan scored four of his five penalties for Italy against France and it would be no surprise if he is again the main source of points for the visitors in Sunday’s match.

England vs Italy Preview

Let’s focus on the two teams. Who will be lining up on either side when the whistle gets the proceedings underway on Sunday afternoon?

England

There are changes for England ahead of this must-win game against Italy. Captain Owen Farrell moves to 10 with Marcus Smith dropped from the side. Ollie Lawrence and Jack Slade also come in with Joe Marchant left out. England’s front five remains the same from the defeat to Scotland.

England line-up: 15 Steward, 14 Malins, 13 Slade, 12 Lawrence, 11 Hassell-Collins, 10 Farrell (c), 9 van Poortvliet, 1 Genge, 2 George, 3 Sinckler, 4 Itoje, 5 Chessum, 6 Ludlam, 7 Willis, 8 Dombrandt

Italy

Edoardo Padovani and Marco Riccioni come into Italy’s starting line-up for this game and they will be looking to build on the second half momentum seen against France last weekend in Rome. Italy will have very little to lose in this game and we expect them to play with more freedom than England.

Italy line-up: 15 Capuozzo, 14 Padovani, 13 Ignacio, 12 Morisi, 11 Menoncello, 10 Allan, 9 Varney, 1 Fischetta, 2 Nicotera, 3 Riccioni, 4 N.Cannone, 5 Ruzza, 6 Negri, 7 Lamaro (c), 8 L.Cannone

England vs Italy Head to Head

Italy are still searching for their first victory over England and are trailing 29-0 in the head to head. England won 33-0 in Rome in last year’s Six Nations fixture.
