Lyon vs Monza Picks, Odds, and Predictions
Lyon will have one of their last tests before the Ligue 1 season continues, it will be against a Serie A side Monza.
Lyon to Win
The French club decided to have a proper preparation period after feeling disappointed with the first part of the season. They played Arsenal, losing 3-0, and Liverpool, winning 3-1, among other teams which gave them a taste of what they needed to improve. They are playing at home against Monza and will aim to give their fans some positive feedback as their training regimen slows down.
Under 2.5 Goals
Lyon did play some high-scoring games in this preparation period, but it was more about building an attacking efficiency than their goal. This time around it will be about balancing the squad. Monza is not a team that plays matches with a lot of goals, so this game could be a low-scoring affair.
Both Teams to Score – No
Monza has been struggling all season to score goals away from home, especially against top teams which Lyon certainly is, and we’ve seen that aspect of their game in their only friendly match thus far, losing 1-0 to Swiss side Lugano.
Lyon vs Monza Preview: Closing the training camp
Lyon
When we look at Lyon’s results throughout this training period, it was evident that coach Laurent Blanc wanted the team to play with more flair, scoring goals, while not thinking about defending too much. That is somewhat strange as Blanc was once a top defender during his playing days. Lyon has enough firepower to be an offensive juggernaut, but it was always about consistency with that team, especially when they are playing away from home. They have won only one game away the entire Ligue 1 season so far, and that happened recently at Montpellier. They lost five matches, drawing once. The difference that can be seen scoring-wise is obvious. They have only seven on the record when playing away, while they got 16 at home. It is about confidence, and they are seriously lacking that aspect when they are not in the comfort of their home.
Monza
The Serie A newcomers didn’t storm the league after moving from the lower division, but they have taken advantage of the fact that so many teams are bad this season. It’s not even the halfway point of the season, and it can already be seen what teams are going to have a tough time escaping relegation. For now, Monza looks safe with nine points clear from the line that separates the good and the bad teams. But, there is still a lot of work to be done. Monza’s coach Raffaele Palladino needs to find a striker who can deliver goals regularly. Currently, their top scorer is, believe it or not, left-back Carlos Augusto who scored three times.
