Note that since the Kentucky Derby is still a couple of months away, it is highly likely that the odds shown in the table above will change in the build up to the event. So while the odds we’ve listed were correct at the time of writing, it is advisable that you check in with the listed bookies to see the latest Kentucky Derby odds before placing your bets.
Contents
Life is Good
This horse is listed inside the top 5 favorites at almost all of the main bookies in the US, and with good reason. This horse is an absolute beast, and if you needed any extra reason to back this horse for the Kentucky Derby, it already won the Sham Stakes just last month in impressive fashion! This shows good form ahead of the Derby, and there are still many races to go in-between.
Concert Tour
Given that this horse is floating around the 10.00-12.00 mark for odds, you’d have thought that the chances of this horse winning are somewhat slim. But this is far from the truth, as Concert Tour has already put in fantastic performances in races like the Grade II San Vicente Stakes – coming in first. In fact, this horse has won 100% of its races in 2021, which certainly bodes well ahead of the Derby.
Greatest Honour
Just like Concert Tour mentioned above, Greatest Honor is 2 for 2 concerning race victories in 2021. When this horse took to the Gulfstream Track just a few days ago, it was clear that the horse has some serious power down the finishing straight – perfect for the Kentucky Derby. And with many bookies currently listing the horse at around 12.00, this would be a great return on your money if it did cross the finish line in pole position.
Kentucky Derby Odds – the outright markets explained
In horse racing, outright betting is pretty much the only kind of wagers you’re going to be able to make. This is especially true for big races like the Kentucky Derby, but although we’ve focused on which horses we feel have a great shot at crossing the line in pole position, there are a few other outright markets to consider.
To Place
Rather than trying to pick which horse will win the race, you could play it a little safer and shoot for a ‘to place’ bet. When you see these markets, it simply means that the horse must finish inside the top 3 for your bet to win, which is why the odds are lower than those that are provided for the same horse to actually win. Of course, all of the horses that we have mentioned in the table above would be good horses to back for this market, but there are others such as Medina Spirit and/or Prevalence that have a great shot for this market too.
Each Way
You can think of an each way bet as a wager that is essentially split into two sections. One of these sections is where you bet that the horse will win the race, and the other is placed on the horse to place. This is ideal if you fancy trying your luck at both of these markets in one, and for this particular market, we’d go for horses like Essential Quality, Life is Good, or Greatest Honour. Just remember that when you make an each way bet, your stake will be doubled and split between these two potential outcomes.
Additional wagers you might want to consider for the Kentucky Derby
Although we’ve talked a lot of Kentucky Derby odds for outright markets, there are a couple of other wagers that you might want to make too. We’ve run over a few details of these right here:
- Accumulator Bet
Not only is this type of wager super popular in horse racing – it is one of the most popular wagers out of all sports. The reason for this is simple really. When you make an accumulator wager, the odds for each of your selections are multiplied together to make a potentially huge return. The only catch is that you must accurately predict every selection to win anything at all. This applies to the Kentucky Derby because you could combine several markets for the same race through a bet builder tool, or you could combine your predictions for this race with others that are taking place during these few days too.
Just keep in mind that accumulator wagers are pretty risky, so make sure you don’t go overboard with your stake!
- Winning distance
Normally, you’ll see some huge Kentucky Derby odds for this particular type of bet. Of course, it’s difficult enough to try and pick a winner or which horse might show for such an enormous race, but it’s even tougher to try and guess the winning distance. But then again, many punters like to explore this market because it adds a large degree of excitement to the race, especially if your chosen horse pulls away from the pack. There are many different distances listed for the Kentucky Derby too, many of which being referred to as ‘furlongs’.
