Two teams at the start of their respective domestic seasons are set to go head-to-head on Thursday night in the second leg of their second Europa Conference League qualifying match. Debrecen take a 1-0 lead into the second leg against Armenian outfit, Alashkert, but both teams are still very much alive in the tie and the competition. The Best Debrecen vs Alashkert Prediction and Picks
Debrecen to win
Both teams started their respective domestic seasons last week and it’s fair to say that Debrecen have gotten off to a better start than their opponents. After gameweek one in Hungary, they sit on top of the pile meanwhile over in Armenia, Alashkert are rock bottom following an opening-day loss to Pyunik. Debrecen were already the favourites going into the tie and considering the early-season form of both teams, we can only see this going one way.
Under 2.5 goals
Going back to the end of last season and the beginning of this one, only three of Alashkert’s last eight games have seen more than two goals which tells its own story about their pragmatic style of play. The outlook is fairly similar for Debrecen – four of their last seven matches have seen less than three goals. When the two teams met last week, chances were hard to come by and we expect a similar pattern in the second leg.
Following on from the previous point, it’s unlikely that both teams are going to get on the scoresheet in this one. Debrecen are a very difficult nut to crack at home and have kept a clean sheet in three of their last four home games in all competitive fixtures. Despite Alakshert needing at least one goal on the night, we think the Debrecen defence will prove to be too difficult to break down.
Debrecen vs Alashkert: An uphill battle for the away side
Last season, Debrecen finished in third place in the Hungarian top tier which earned them the right to enter the Europa Conference League qualifying in the second round. It means that last week’s first leg was their first competitive outing of the season so they will be pleased to be heading into the second leg with an advantage. If they can get the job done at home on Thursday then they will be just two rounds away from the group stages of the competition.
Alashkert haven’t been quite as fortunate as Debrecen in that they have already had to play one qualifier to even get to this stage of the tournament. They came through that one courtesy from a 6-1 away win in the second leg and they would give just about anything for a repeat performance in Hungary on Thursday night. If they are to win, then they will need a big performance from their main man up front, Agdon, who netted a hat-trick in that 6-1 win.
