Petra Martic has lost in the opening round in her last three Western & Southern Open appearances and now will have a chance to go a step further against the qualifier Emma Navarro.
Navarro is having a solid season and making it to the main draw in Cincinnati for the first time in her career confirms that. She lacks experience on this level, which is not the case for Martic, but still, the American is the better player at the moment and will advance to the next round.
Over 21.5 games
Navarro played three sets in both qualifying matches earlier this week. Martic is a player on a higher level than her previous opponents and this will be another tough battle going over 21.5 games.
Petra Martic is 10 years older than Emma Navarro and made her debut in Cincinnati in 2011 while Navarro does that this year. This is their first match against each other which is another reason why this match is hard to predict.
Petra Martic
Petra Martic is currently 36th in the WTA rankings and her career high was No. 14. The Croatian is 22-17 for the season and 4-8 on hard.
She is coming off a second round loss in Montreal against the world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka, 6-3, 7-6. Previously, she defeated Christina Bucsa in the opening round.
Martic’s best result this season was the final in Linz where she lost to Anastasia Potapova. Last year, Martic won the tournament in Lausanne which is the third WTA title in her career. Her best result in Cincinnati is the round of 16 in 2011.
Emma Navarro is 54th in the rankings, one spot lower than her career high. She is 45-17 for the season and 5-4 on hard.
In the first qualifying round, Navarro defeated Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 and then went past Rebecca Marino 4-6, 6-0, 6-1. This is the first time for her to qualify for the main draw in Cincinnati.
Previously, Navarro played in Lausanne where she lost to Clara Burel 6-3, 6-2 after winning 6-0, 6-0 in the opener against Leolia Jeanjean.
Navarro won three lower level tournaments so far in the season. She lifted the trophy in Charlottesville, Charleston and Naples, all three times playing on clay.
This will be the first match ever between Petra Martic and Emma Navarro.
