Cincinnati Open seeds 2023: Will Alcaraz bounce back?

The Cincinnati Open is a mandatory Masters 1000 tournament on the 2023 ATP Tour and a non-mandatory WTA 1000 tournament on the 2023 WTA Tour. The tournament will take place from August 13-20, 2023 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio, a northern suburb of Cincinnati.

Both men’s and women’s tournaments will feature 64 in the main draw and accordingly, 16 players from each competition are seeded. In the following lines, we will take a closer look at the Western & Southern Open seeds.

Cincinnati Open Seeds Men’s Singles

The 2018 Western & Southern Open champion Novak Djokovic is back in action and we will have all of the Top 10 players in Cincinnati. World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz is the top seed and he will have a lot to prove after losing last week in Toronto.

1. Carlos Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz is in the semifinals but no one could have predicted that he would need three sets in all three previous matches. The world No. 1 defeated Jordan Thompson in the second round, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, then went past Tommy Paul 7-6, 6-7, 6-3 in the round of 16 and also needed three sets to defeat Max Purcell 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. His semifinal opponent is the world No. 20, Hubert Hurkacz.

  • Win vs Purcell 4-6, 6-3, 6-4
  • Round of 16: Win vs Paul 7-6, 6-7, 6-3
  • Second round: Win vs Thompson 7-5, 4-6, 6-3

2. Novak Djokovic

The 2019 Cincinnati Open champion had an easy start of the tournament. In the second round, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina retired after Djokovic won the first set 6-4. In the round of 16, Djokovic defeated Gael Monfils 6-3, 6-2 and Taylor Fritz was neither a challenging opponent in the quarterfinals. Djokovic moves on to the semifinals where he will play Alexander Zverev.

  • Round of 16: Win vs Monfils 6-3, 6-2
  • Second round: Win vs Davidovich Fokina 6-4, ret.

3. Daniil Medvedev

After beating Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 6-2 in the second round, Medvedev lost to Alexander Zverev, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in the round of 16.

  • Round of 16: Loss vs Zverev 6-4, 5-7, 6-4
  • Second round: Win vs Musetti 6-3, 6-2

4. Stefanos Tsitsipas

After beating Ben Shelton 7-6, 7-6 in the second round, Tsitsipas lost to Hubert Hurkacz, 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 16.

  • Round of 16: Loss vs Hurkacz 6-3, 6-4
  • Second round: Win vs Shelton 7-6, 7-6

5. Casper Ruud

Ruud lost in his first match in Cincinnati, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 against Max Purcell in the second round of the tournament.

  • Second round: Loss vs Purcell 6-4, 3-6, 6-4

6. Holger Rune

Rune retired in the second round match against Mackenzie McDonald with the American leading 6-4, 2-0.

  • Second round: Loss vs McDonald: 6-4, 2-0, ret.

7. Andrey Rublev

Rublev lost in his first match in Cincinnati, 7-6, 5-7, 7-6 against Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round of the tournament.

  • Second round: Loss vs Ruusuvuori 7-6, 5-7, 7-6

8. Jannik Sinner

Sinner lost in his first match in Cincinnati, 6-4, 7-6 against Dusan Lajovic in the second round of the tournament.

  • Second round: Loss vs Lajovic 6-4, 7-6

Cincinnati Open Seeds Women’s Singles

The best players from the women’s tour will participate in Cincinnati. Last year’s champion, Caroline Garcia is the sixth seed.

1. Iga Swiatek

The world No. 1 is in the quarterfinals after beating Danielle Collins 6-1, 6-0 in the second round and Qinwen Zheng 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Swiatek defeated Marketa Vondrousova 7-6, 6-1 and will play Coco Gauff in the semis.

  • Quarterfinals: Win vs Vondrousova 7-6, 6-1
  • Round of 16: Win vs Zheng 3-6, 6-1, 6-1
  • Second round: Win vs Collins 6-1, 6-0

2. Aryna Sabalenka

Sabalenka is in the quarterfinals after beating Ann Li 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 in the second round and Darya Kasatkina 6-3, 6-3 in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Sabalenka defeated Ons Jabeur 7-5, 6-3 and will play Karolina Muchova next.

  • Quarterfinals: Win vs Muchova 7-5, 6-3
  • Round of 16: Win vs Kasatkina 6-3, 6-3
  • Second round: Win vs Li 7-5, 2-6, 6-4

3. Jessica Pegula

After beating Martina Trevisan 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 in the second round, Pegula lost to Marie Bouzkova 6-4, 6-0 in the round of 16.

  • Round of 16: Loss vs Bouzkova 6-4, 6-0
  • Second round: Win vs Trevisan 6-7, 6-3, 6-2

4. Elena Rybakina

After beating Jelena Ostapenko 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 in the second round, Rybakina retired against Jasmine Paolini in the round of 16.

  • Round of 16: Loss vs Paolini 4-6, 5-2, ret.
  • Second round: Win vs Ostapenko 6-7, 6-2, 6-4

5. Ons Jabeur

Jabeur is in the quarterfinals after beating Anhelina Kalinina 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 in the second round and Donna Vekic retired in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Jabeur lost to Aryna Sabalenka 7-5, 6-3.

  • Quarterfinals: Loss vs 7-5, 6-3
  • Round of 16: Win vs Vekic 5-2, ret.
  • Second round: Win vs Kalinina 6-3, 6-7, 7-6

6. Caroline Garcia

The defending champion lost in his first match in Cincinnati, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 against Sloane Stephens in the second round of the tournament.

  • Second round: Loss vs Stephens 4-6, 6-4, 6-4

7. Coco Gauff

Gauff is in the quarterfinals after beating Mayar Sherif 6-2, 6-2 in the second round and Linda Noskova 6-4, 6-0 in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Gauff defeated Jasmine Paolini 6-3, 6-2. The American moves to the semifinals where she will face the world No. 1, Iga Swiatek.

  • Round of 16: Win vs Noskova 6-4, 6-0
  • Second round: Win vs Sherif 6-2, 6-2

8. Maria Sakkari

After beating Sorana Cirstea 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the second round, Sakkari lost to Karolina Muchova 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 in the round of 16.

  • Second round: Win vs Cirstea 2-6, 6-3, 7-5
