Daniil Medvedev Australian Open 2023 Odds
As we head into the first slam of 2023, Medvedev is ranked number 8 in the world. Without question, the 26-year-old Russian is one of the best hard-court players on tour. This is confirmed by the fact that he is a Grand Slam champion, winning the 2021 US Open against Djokovic. And he has also been involved in the final of the Australian Open twice, as well as one other US Open final where he lost to Rafael Nadal.
Due to these factors and his form, Medvedev is the second favourite to win the 2023 Australian Open. Here are the current outright odds:
Since Medvedev has made the final for the last two years, it’s logical to see that he is one of the favourites. In fact, only Djokovic is ahead of Medvedev in terms of the outright odds to win the title. As for others who are close to Medvedev, the next guy in line as the third favourite is Tsitsipas, who has odds of 13.00. So Medvedev is obviously heavily tipped by many punters at the moment.
Upcoming match vs Korda – Medvedev Australian Open 2023
After Carlos Alcaraz pulled out from the 2023 Australian Open, everyone moved up a place concerning the seedings. This means that Daniil Medvedev is now the 7th seed for the Australian Open, even if he is the second favourite to win.
He breezed past the opening 2 rounds without dropping a set, with only 2 games or less dropped in the 5 of the 6 sets he won in these 2 matches.
Medvedev hasn’t met Korda recently. Their only previous encounter was during the 2021 Paris’s Masters when the Russian came from a set down to win 2:1. Since then Medvedev’s career has been going only from strength to strength though. He even became the world number 1 not that long ago, so he clearly enters this match as a clear favourite.
Korda can cause problems and is a very good player on his own right, but the Russian should have enough to win this match. He might be tested much more than in the first 2 rounds though and he will have to show much better efficiency regarding his second serve and his returns.
We think this might be the first true test for Medvedev’s 2023 Australian Open aspirations but that the Russian will pass it with relative ease. He should be able to close the game without even allowing it to go to 5 sets.
Medvedev Australian Open – His Form in 2023
Medvedev decided to play just one warm-up event prior to the Australian Open this year. He played in the first Adelaide International tournament last week, and he made the semi-finals before losing to Novak Djokovic. So he has enjoyed a fair bit of court time before things kick off in Melbourne. As for the overview of his last four games before Australian Open, you can see them here:
Medvedev Form Prior to Australian Open 2023
- Medvedev vs Djokovic – lost – 3-6, 4-6
- Medvedev vs Khachanov – won – 6-3, 6-3
- Medvedev vs Kecmanovic – won – 6-0, 6-3
- Medvedev vs Sonego – won – 7-6, 2-1 (RET)
Amazingly, the only loss within the last four games have come against Djokovic. Of course, Medvedev has still beaten two top 20 players in that run in the form of Khachanov and Kecmanovic. So he is obviously playing good tennis.
Medvedev Australian Open 2023 Results
- Medvedev vs Giron – Won – 6-0, 6-1, 6-2 (2023 Australia Open 1st Round)
- Medvedev vs Millman – Won – 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 (2023 Australian Open 2nd Round)
Medvedev had to withstand an Aussie storm in the first set of his second round match against the local darling boy Millman. The Russian kept his cool though and despite some shaky serving games and 2 breaks for his rival Medvedev still came 7-5 on top.
From that point on it became easy with Millman clearly offering his best tennis early on and unable to sustain it for more than an hour. Medvedev continued to have serious problems on his second serve, but he was dominant with his aces and winners and won the next 2 sets with the same 6-2 scoreline.
Medvedev’s first serve was effective and he hit 10 aces in this match, compared to only 3 double faults. However, his second serve was very weak. The Russian won only 32% of the points (10 out of 31) on his second serve. He also struggled on return and finished the match with 0 return winners and 7 return unforced errors.
The win was impressive, but clearly Medvedev has areas where he needs to improve as tougher opponents lie ahead.
Medvedev Injury update: All fine in this department
Daniil Medvedev isn’t a guy that gets injured all that often. In fact, he’s only withdrawn a few times in his entire career. And this trend of staying physically fit seems to be staying strong moving into the opening slam of 2023. He looked absolutely fine when competing in the Adelaide International.
His fitness has remained solid throughout the first 2 rounds of the 2023 Australian Open too. The Russian has been moving very well across the court in those games.
Medvedev Past Australian Open Results
The Australian Open has been the second most successful Grand Slam for Daniil Medvedev throughout his career. He has a 76% win percentage at this event, and in total, he has won 19 matches in Melbourne. This has come with the loss of just 6 matches, which is still rather impressive. And as mentioned above, he has made the final of the Australian Open for the last two years – 2022 and 2021.
In the 2021 final, he received a bit of a lesson from Novak Djokovic, sure. But in the 2022 final, he was seriously close to capturing his first Australian Open title. If it wasn’t for a legendary fightback from Rafael Nadal we are sure he would have registered his second Grand Slam title too. Of course, this bodes well going into the Australian Open 2023 as Medvedev has been hugely successful here in recent times.
He even made the 4th round in both 2020 and 2019. This was before he really made a name for himself as one of the best players in the world, however. And for those who are interested, Daniil Medvedev first competed in the Australian Open in 2017, where he lost his opening match. This was the one and only time where Medvedev fell in the first round.
Medvedev Australian Open 2023 Prediction – semi-final or final
As the 7th seed this year, Medvedev has been placed in the top half of the draw. Yes, that means that he is in the same half as the top seed, Rafael Nadal. In fact, Medvedev is actually in the same quarter as Rafael Nadal. However, with Nadal now out of the tournament Medvedev’s chances to reach another Australian Open final have increased significantly. Prior to that round, Medvedev could face other great players like Korda in the 3rd round and Hurkacz in the 4th round.
Anyway, we feel that he is still one of the greatest hard-court players at the moment. If the seeding went to plan, this would set up a clash with Tsitsipas or Auger-Aliassime in the semis. Of course, both of these guys are awesome players, and this would be a tough test for Medvedev.
But we think he could definitely reach that round if not make it to the final for the third time.
