The 2023 Australian Open champion and world number 2 Aryna Sabalenka had been the woman to beat so far this calendar year. She’s been achieving clean wins all season and we expect her to make a fast job of this first-ever matchup against the talented, but lacking big ground strokes, Bouzkova. The Czech last beat a top-20 player way back in August. She barely survived in round 2 and we simply don’t think she will be much of a rival for the in-form Sabalenka. That’s why we think the match will have fewer than 20 games, with our prediction of 2 quick sets for the Belarusian.

One of the key reasons why Sabalenka had been so successful in 2023 is her aggression early in matches. On her way to the Australian Open title, she broke the first service game of her opponents in 4 of the 7 matches. She did the same in 4 of her 5 matches on the way to the final of the most recent Masters at Indian Wells. That’s why we think she will seek another fast start and an early 2-0 lead.

The 24-year-old Czech Bouzkova has dropped out of the top 30 as she is having a difficult year. Just in the last month, she suffered 3 defeats against players outside the top 80. She lost in round 1 in 4 of her 5 tournaments this calendar year, including the Australian Open, and she even failed to make it to the main draw in Qatar after losing in the qualifiers.
Clearly, Bouzkova is not in great shape right now. This was evident once more in round 2 in Miami when she needed to come from a set down to eventually edge the world 110 Blinkova in over 2 hours of play.
Aryna Sabalenka
Sabalenka started 2023 with 2 titles, the second being her first-ever Grand Slam. She took some time off to enjoy her triumph in Melbourne but returned in great form in late February. She made the quarterfinals of Dubai and only last week reached the Indian Wells final where an annoying defeat was suffered after squandering 5 set points in the first set.
Sabalenka opened her run in Miami with an easy straight-set win against the American Rogers. Yet again, the big-serving Belarusian was hard to contain and right now she is bursting with confidence.
