Mackenzie McDonald vs Matteo Berrettini – Match Predictions
Contents
Berrettini to Win
After his early exit at Indian Wells, lost in his first match, Berrettini warmed up for Miami with a small tournament in Phoenix where he reached the quarterfinals. The Italian is clearly focused on doing much better in Florida and he will be extra motivated to avoid another early exit.
We back Berrettini to do just that not only because he remains a top-class player and deserves his top-30 ranking but also because he clearly knows how to beat McDonald. Berrettini won both of the previous 2 matches between the two, with both of those games played on the same surface.
Set 1 After 4 Games – 2-2
We might believe that Berrettini will win but we don’t think that it would be easy as he is struggling with injuries this year and is still not able to offer his usual high level of tennis.
McDonald knows that and he will hope to hang in the match for as long as possible, predicting that at some stage Berrettini’s fitness might start working against him. With that in mind we think both players will be very careful not to allow early breaks. That’s why our prediction is that after 4 games are played in the first set the result will be tied at 2-2.

Sonego continues to make steady progress with his play and results. Thiem has been heading sharply in the completely opposite direction for some time now.
Mackenzie McDonald
McDonald is having a solid year and he already achieved some impressive wins. Back in January the American beat the injured Rafa Nadal in straight sets in Australia only to lose his very next match in round 3 of the Australian Open.
Back on home soil, McDonald has been playing well and he reached the semi-finals at Delray Beach and the quarterfinals at Acapulco. He then suffered a round 2 exit at the Indian Wells though, but that was against the world number 8 Holger Rune.
In his first match of the 2023 Miami Open McDonald easily beat the clay-specialist Galan 6-4, 6-2.
Matteo Berrettini
Back in January, Berrettini led Italy to the final of the United Cup where he lost against the Americans, when Taylor Fritz beat him. Berrettini then suffered a dramatic round 1 exit from the Australian Open in 5 sets against Andy Murray.
Berrettini got injured in that match and then took a month off before returning to the tour in late February in Acapulco. However, after 2 wins he had to retire in the quarterfinals again. Still, not 100% fit Berrettini then lost his first match at Indian Wells.
He’s feeling much better, according to his own admission, and the Italian warmed up for Miami with 3 matches against players outside the world’s top 100 in Phoenix. As a seeded player Berrettini received a Bye in round 1 so this is his first match of the tournament.
Mackenzie McDonald vs Matteo Berrettini Head to Head
Berrettini leads the H2H 2-0, with both his wins over McDonald achieved exactly on an outdoor hard surface. Back in 2019, Berrettini won in straight sets in Auckland. Last year though he needed 3 sets to beat McDonald on home soil in Naples.
