On Wednesday afternoon (British Summer Time), after winning in straight sets during the first round, American Lauren Davis takes on Slovenian competitor Kaja Juvan, also arrives here off the back a straight-set victory last time out. This is an interesting match-up. On the one hand, we have Lauren Davis, who is now ranked 50th in the world, and on the other, there’s Kaja Juvan, who lingers outside of the world’s top 100, ranking 145th right now. Davis plays on home soil here, which is an advantage, of course, though she’s not exactly been in flying form of late, so could the Slovenian cause an upset? Below are my WTA US Open 2023 predictions for this match:
Lauren Davis to Win @ 4/5 (1.80)
For starters, Lauren Davis is ranked much higher than Kaja Juvan. Now rankings aren’t everything and we do often seen lower-ranked players winning, though it’s easy to feel that Kaja Juvan is more up against it here than the early odds suggest. The Slovenian player has been in strong form of late, but she’s only faced one decent player, who really wasn’t at her best. It’s probably fair to say that her odds are based on a slight overreaction to her form in qualifying.
Davis beat a top-100 player with relative ease during the first round, which ought to have given her confidence a real boost. On that evidence alone, she could easily be a stronger favourite here, let alone once you factor in that she’s competed well against some much better players than Juvan of late, taking a set off of the likes of Alycia Parks and Sloane Stephens, both of whom are ranked inside the top 50. She also beat Sloane Stephens in Washington recently. Against lesser opposition, she can get the job done.
Lauren Davis to Win 2:0 @ 2/1 (3.00)
The last time these two faced off was back in 2022. On that occasion, Davis won in straight sets, delivering something of a comprehensive victory on grass. As touched on above, she looks a good bet to come through this test having battled well against some much better players of late, and with the home crowd behind her, she can do without the need of a third set.

29-year-old Lauren Davis comes into the US Open as the 50th best player in the world according to the current WTA rankings. She’s off the back of a strong win in the first round, her first win five matches. Adopting an aggressive back-hand, on her day Davis can be a tricky customer, though she’s never been further than the second round at a Grand Slam, so perhaps this is her year.
Kaja Juvan preview
Down in the rankings of late, Kaja Juvan arrives at the US Open in solid form having impressed during the qualification process, which for her, consisted of three matches. The Slovenian took that sound qualifying form and built on it during round one of the competition, beating Cocciaretto, who is currently ranked 29th in the world. Juvan has never been further than round two at a US Open, so she’ll be hoping to do better here.
Davis vs Juvan head to head
This will be just the third time that the pair have met. Their first match came back in 2020 on a clay court in Rome, where Juvan won by two sets to nil. However, when the pair met on a grass surface last year, Davis returned the favour, winning in straight sets.
