Hubert Hurkacz Australian Open 2023: Odds, next match and predictions

Run through our Hurkacz Australian Open 2023 predictions presented right here.

Hubert Hurkacz Australian Open 2023 Odds

The powerful Pole had to go through 2 dramatic 5-set wins already on way to what will be his best ever Australian Open run no matter what happens from now on. Hurkacz has the weapons to be effective on hard courts and he is a dangerous opponent. Here are the current outright odds:

The world number 11 is obviously not seen as a serious contender for the title. Considering he already went through some tough matches and his non-existing experience regarding second weeks of Grand Slams we understand why.

Upcoming match vs Korda – Hurkacz Australian Open 2023

Hurkacz now faces a player with similar style. Both of them rely on powerful serves and hit the ball hard from the baseline. This suggests that the coming clash will have at least 1 tiebreak, possibly more.

Hurkacz won the only previous match between the two. He recorded clean 2:0 win on the hard courts of Cincinnati against Korda. On that occasion the Pole dominated and was on top from start to finish. Considering this we believe Hurkacz still might have enough left in the tank to record another Australian Open win. It won’t be easy though and another long match can be expected, so this will seriously test Hurkacz’s fitness.

Hurkacz 2023 Australian Open Results

  • Hurkacz vs Martinez – Won – 7-6 (1), 6-2, 6-2 (2023 Australian Open 1st Round)
  • Hurkacz vs Sonego – Won – 3-6, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 (2023 Australian Open 2nd Round)
  • Hurkacz vs Shapovalov – Won – 7-6 (3), 6-4, 1-6, 4-6, 6-3 (2023 Australian Open 3rd Round)

After relatively easy win in the opening round against a modest opponent Hurkacz had to go through back-to-back 5-set wins to reach this far. He showed strong will and character both times. Against Sanogo he came back both from 0:1 and 1:2 down to win. Then in round 3 against the 20th seed Shapovalov he threw away a 2-set lead but still managed to regroup and claim the fifth set.

Hurkacz’s serve is causing serious damage as expected and his thunderous forehand is working well so far. He gets in trouble when moved around the court too much though, with his size making him a bit slow for the fast courts of Melbourne. The other serious weakness that got him in trouble in the last 2 rounds was his inefficiency when returning serves. Nearly 25% of his unforced errors so far had been service returns.

Hurkacz Injury update: Minor knee injury to monitor

After his round 3 win Hurkacz had to go and see a medic according to reports. He was bothered by his right knee near the end of that match and was seen flexing his leg often in the fifth set. It seems the issue is not serious and Hurkacz has been training hard ahead of his next test.

Still carrying a knee injury, even a minor one, into a match that could potentially last for hours is something worth worrying for. Especially, when we consider how big and heavy Hurkacz’s body is.

Hurkacz Past Australian Open Results

Up until now the Australian Open had been Hurkacz’s worst Grand Slam. He was part of the main draw in all of the last 4 years, but never made it past round 2. In fact in 2 of those 4 previous appearances he was eliminated in the opening round.

Hurkacz Australian Open 2023 Prediction – 4th Round or quarterfinals

Hurkacz has a realistic chance of beating Korda in round 4, but considering his minor knee issue and fatigue factor after back-to-back 5-set matches this might not transpire. Even if we assume he can get through the lack of experience and accumulated tiredness are likely to see him eliminated in the quarterfinals.

The way the draw shaped means that all opponents Hurkacz could face from now until the semis are ranked lower than him. However, we don’t believe he will have enough energy left to go that deep and our prediction is an exit before that stage.
