Hubert Hurkacz is taking on the defending champion in the third round of the Western & Southern Open today. His opponent is, of course, Borna Coric. Yet can the big-hitting Polish player take out the reigning champion? Check out my tennis predictions today to find out.
These odds from Ladbrokes were correct at the time of writing.
Hurkacz vs Coric – match predictions
This is a very interesting match-up, especially considering that it’s still so early in the Western & Southern Open. As a second-round match, this is one of the toughest draws out there, and I say this for both guys. Coric is the defending champion, while Hurkacz has been playing out of his skin within the last week or two. But at the end of the day, this match has to go one way or the other.
So with that in mind, I’ve got two betting tips to share with you:
Hurkacz to win
Although Coric is the reigning champion in Cincinnati, I believe that Hurkacz will beat him today. I say that because the way he played at the Canadian Open was quite phenomenal. And to be honest, he should have beaten the world number one, Carlos Alcaraz, in the third round of that event.
Hurkacz -2.5 games handicap
Given that I am picking Hubert Hurkacz to win, it makes sense to also back a -2.5 games handicap in favor of the world number 20. This could pull through whether he wins in straight sets or three sets, depending on the scoreline, of course. And with his big serve combined with his powerful groundstrokes, this market has every chance to be a winner.

Want to know a little bit more about how these guys are shaping up against one another? Take a quick look at the previews shared here.
Hubert Hurkacz preview
Hubert Hurkacz has previously been a top-10 player, so the fact that he’s now ranked 20 shouldn’t misguide punters. On his day, he can even play like a top 5 player, in my opinion. Anyway, due to his ranking, he isn’t one of the Cincinnati Open seeds for this tournament. Yet he is one of the best in the draw outside of the seeded players.
Borna Coric preview
For Borna Coric, it’s a bit of a different story. He had previously been tipped as the next big thing in tennis a few years back, yet he’s endured many injuries in his career. Then again, he obviously pulled it together last year to win this title, which was huge. He is ranked 16 in the world at the minute too, and he beat Sebastian Korda in straight sets last round to set up this clash.
Hurkacz vs Coric head to head
The current head-to-head figures won’t be something that Hubert Hurkacz wants to look at for too long. It’s currently 3-1 in favor of Coric, and Hurkacz beat him back in 2020. Since that result, Coric has beaten him twice. Yet the good news for Hurkacz is that the one time they played on outdoor hard courts, this was the match that he won.
