John Isner has been drawn to play fellow American, Emilio Nava, in the first round of the 2023 Miami Open. The big-serving American earned the best victory of his career back in 2018 when he won this event and he will be hoping for a deep run again on the hard courts of Miami. Here are some pre-match predictions to whet your appetite before the All-American clash.

John Isner to win 2-0
Father time may well be finally catching up with John Isner but we still think he will have enough to see off Emilio Nava, who has qualified for the event via a wild card. At 37, Isner is at the opposite end of his career to Nava but his serve is still strong enough to cause problems for anyone when it’s firing.
Nava spends the vast majority of his time at the moment on the Challenger tour meaning that this jump in quality could be too much to handle. He has never made it past the first round of an ATP 1000 event and that is unlikely to change here against a player as experienced as Isner
First set tiebreak – yes
Backing a tiebreak in any set that involves John Isner always seems like a reasonable thing to do, particularly on a hard court. Isner has made a career out of being one of the best servers around meaning it is going to be very difficult for a player ranked 180th in the world to break his serve. Luckily for Nava, Isner’s ability to break his opponents’ serve is also diminishing as he gets older.
At the Dallas Open last month, eight of Isner’s 12 sets in the tournament went to a tournament, displaying just how common they are for him.
With our predictions established, let’s take a closer look at both men and their form going into the match.
At the age of 21, Emilio Nava shouldn’t still be relying on wildcards to play in big events such as the Miami Open. After reaching two grand slam finals as a boy, he is yet to show anything that would suggest he can mix it at the top of the men’s game.
His 2023 form doesn’t make for good reading, either. He has lost nine out of his 16 matches this year and endured a torrid February where he failed to win a single match. If he can find a way past John Isner then it would arguably be the biggest win of his career to date.
John Isner
The days of John Isner being a major threat at tournaments is over but that doesn’t mean that the 37-year-old can’t still navigate his way through the early rounds of certain events. On American hard courts, he is usually highly competitive and he will be relishing the prospect of facing Taylor Fritz in round two if he can overcome Nava.
This is the first time that the two men have played against each other.
