Daniel Evans vs Lorenzo Sonego Predictions and Odds: Miami Open

Daniel Evans and Lorenzo Sonego face off with a spot in the Miami Open round of 32 on the line. Check out the predictions and odds available for this match.

Daniel Evans vs Lorenzo Sonego Match Predictions

Evans and Sonego will meet for the second time in their careers. The two players come into this match under very different circumstances. While Sonego is enjoying a somewhat solid start, things are much different for Evans.

Sonego -1.5 Sets

The Italian is in much better form than Evans. Heading into this match, Sonego has won three of his previous five. Evans, meanwhile, is coming off four consecutive losses. The British player has not won a match in singles since the second round of this year’s Australian Open.

Sonego did not drop a set in his previous three wins, while Evans failed to win a single set in his four-match losing streak. The 32-year old injured his ankle in Doha, and has struggled ever since. Sonego is the undeniable favorite against the #23 seed.

Sonego -2.5 Games

Following the same train of thought, if Sonego wraps this one up in straight sets, he also has a very good chance of covering this line. Of course, this would require him to get at least two breaks, but that’s perfectly doable.

Evans’ serve has never been the Brit’s strongest weapon, and he has struggled with that part of the game in the most recen matches. The 32-year old from Birmingham faced a combined 20 break points in the last two matches, allowing his opponents a combined eight breaks. Sonego is coming off a three-break performance against Dominic Thiem.

Daniel Evans vs Lorenzo Sonego Preview

Let’s take a look at these two players’ recent form heading into the match.

Daniel Evans

As mentioned above, Evans’ recent form hasn’t been particularly great. The British player injured his right ankle during a first round loss to Emil Ruusuvuori at the Doha Open, and has not won a match ever since. Evans withdrew from Dubai a week later, and then had another first round exit at the Indian Wells Masters.

There is a silver lining: Evans doesn’t have to worry about defending his points this week, as the Brit also exited last year’s Miami Open during the round of 64.

Lorenzo Sonego

After two first round exits in Adelaide, Sonego made it to the second round in Melbourne. The Italian nearly pulled off an upset, taking Hubert Hurkacz to five sets. He followed it up with a quarterfinals appearance in Marseille, repeating that result in Dubai a few weeks later. It was also in the UAE tournament that Sonego scored his first top 10 win of the year, taking down Felix Auger-Aliassime in the first round.

A solid run in Miami could see the 27-year old from Turin get closer to a return to the top 50.

Daniel Evans vs Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head

These two players have only met once at the Tour level, which happened in the semifinals of the 2020 Erste Bank Open, in Vienna. Sonego won in straight sets (6-3 6-4) to continue an impressive run that had already seen him upset Novak Djokovic. The Italian reached his first ATP 500 final, but ultimately lost to Andrey Rublev.
