This round 16 clash sees the world number 6 and a local hopeful Coco Gauff take on the Swedish world number 103 Rebecca Peterson in a game that in theory should be very one-sided. Below is our prediction for the match.
These odds from Ladbrokes were correct at the time of writing.
Coco Gauff vs Rebecca Peterson – Match Predictions
Contents
Although we are expecting Peterson to try and give a good account of herself, we don’t think she will be a match for one of the favourites Gauff, especially only a day after her birthday. We believe that our tips for the match are very solid. Let’s take a closer look at them.
Gauff to Win 2-0
Gauff was solid in both her wins in the tournament so far and she is yet to drop a set. Celebrating her 19th birthday on Monday Gauff will be pumped up to too, so we really believe that she will make a fast start and secure another clean win.
Sitting outside the world top 100 Peterson already exceeded expectations with her 2 dramatic 3-set wins against other unseeded players and the lucky progress in round 2 when the 22nd seed Zheng retired after only 3 games played. Peterson is yet to beat a top 10 player in her career and we don’t think she has the weapons to trouble Gauff.
Total Games – Under 20.5
To follow our first betting prediction we also think that the match will have fewer than 21 games. Both of Gauff’s wins so far during the 2023 Indian Wells were quick and with fewer than 20 games even. Yes, Peterson went over 21 games in the 2 full matches she played so far, but those were close 3-set clashes. We don’t think this match will have a third set and we back Gauff to win easily.
Coco Gauff vs Rebecca Peterson Preview
Let’s take a closer look at their form and hopes for the tournament.
Coco Gauff
Gauff entered the tournament on the back of a nice run to the semifinals in Dubai where she lost to the world number 1 Iga Swiatek. Gauff already won a title in 2023, she lifted the trophy on the hard courts of Auckland just before the Australian Open.
Gauff’s first 2 opponents were higher ranked that Peterson and yet the American had little trouble winning both matches in just over an hour and without dropping more than 4 games in any of the 4 sets. Gauff’s serving so far in this tournament had been impressive. Her baseline strokes have been very good too.
Rebecca Peterson
Peterson has played mostly Challengers this year. She didn’t even made it past the first qualifying round of the Australian Open back in January either. The Swede squeezed into the main draw of Indian Wells though and she has grabbed her chance.
In round 1 she eliminated Marta Kostyuk in 3 very close sets. Peterson saved 4 match points in that contest. Then she got lucky in round 2 after the 22nd seed Zheng retired injured just 3 games into the contest. Peterson played another dramatic 3-set match in her next match against another unseeded player Teichmann. Overall, she has exceeded expectations and also must feel tired after 2 grueling clashes already.
Coco Gauff vs Rebecca Peterson Head to Head
The only previous meeting between the two was way back in 2019. Gauff was only 16-years-old back then and this is the main reason why she lost 2-6, 1-6. Still, Peterson can gain some confidence from this fact.
