Gauff Indian Wells 2023 Odds
Contents
The 18-year-old American Coco Gauff enters this year’s Indian Wells as number 6 in the world with very high ambitions to make a strong impression under the Californian sun. Here are the odds for reference:
At 15/1 (16.00) odds to win the title, down from 20/1 at the start of the tournament, Gauff is the sixth favourite. These odds suggest that her chances are considered to be slim. We don’t think she has the stamina or mental grit needed to win a WTA1000 event just yet. Gauff can rely on passionate support though and she has proven already that on a good day she can beat anyone. Can she win multiple games against top 5 opponents in the same week is a different question though.
Upcoming match vs Sabalenka – Gauff Indian Wells 2023
Gauff received a Bye in round 1 being the world number 6. She then got very lucky with the draw and in 3 consecutive rounds faced players outside the world top 50. Still, in the round of 16 Gauff played very poorly and was fortunate to progress past the world number 103 Peterson.
Now the 19-year-old American faces the woman in hottest form so far in 2023 and the world number 2 Sabalenka. The Belarusian lifted the Australian Open title in January and she has just 1 defeat on the tour so far this year.
For the first time Gauff enters a match at this year’s Indian Wells as an outsider. We wonder if this could help her to produce much better tennis than what she showed in the previous round. We certainly think the battle will be exciting and we expect it to go to 3 sets. Gauff will fancy her chances as she leads the H2H against the Belarusian 3-1. It must be stressed that 3 of those 4 matches went to a third set tiebreak, so the clashes between these two have been very even up to now. Their last meeting was at the 2022 Toronto with Gauff coming from 0-3 deficit in the third set to triumph 7-5, 4-6, 7-6.
As much as we think the match will be close, we don’t think Gauff has enough in herself to beat what has clearly been the best female tennis player so far in 2023. Gauff’s recent games against top 10 opponents is also discouraging, she lost 11 of her last 13 such matches. All-in-all, we think Gauff will put up a good fight but we think she will come short in the end.
Gauff Indian Wells 2023 Results
Gauff – Bye (2023 Indian Wells 1st Round)
- Gauff – Bucsa – Won – 6-2, 6-4 (2023 Indian Wells 2nd Round)
- Gauff – Noskova – Won – 6-4, 6-3 (2023 Indian Wells 3rd Round)
- Gauff – Peterson – Won – 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 (2023 Indian Wells 4th Round)
After sitting out the opening round due to her high ranking the 19-year-old Gauff began her 2023 Indian Wells charge with a routine straight sets win against the Spanish world number 90 Bucsa. Gauff dominated the first set and easily won it. She had some issues with unforced errors and double faults in the second set though. Still won 6-4, but the display late in the game wasn’t that convincing.
Gauff’s first serve wasn’t working that well in this match. She won only 69% of her 1st serve points (25 out of 36) and allowed 7 breakpoints to Bucsa. Gauff saved 6 of those breakpoints. Still, it was concerning for her to give away so many chances to a player that is not known for her strong returns.
In round 3 Gauff faces the world number 54 Noskova and again she won in straight sets, but was pushed in both those sets – 6-4, 6-3. However, she improved vastly on her first serve and her percentage of 1st serve points won jumped to 89%. That was the main reason why she never got broken in the match and allowed only 1 breakpoint.
Gauff then played a very poor match in round 4 and was close to a shock defeat against the world number 103 Peterson. It took Gauff over 2 hours to win this duel in 3 sets. She was close to going down 2 breaks in the decider, also had to save 4 breakpoints at 4-4 in the final set before eventually edging it 6-4. This was clearly Gauff’s worst display so far in California and she was lucky to get away with it. Her own serve looked very vulnerable. Her returns were also not efficient enough.
Coco Gauff’s Form Ahead Of 2023 Indian Wells
Gauff moved back into the top 6 in the world after a strong start to 2023. She already won a title this year when lifting the Auckland 250 in January. Most recently she reached the Dubai semifinals and has been playing some good tennis lately. Here are the last five performances for a quick snapshot:
Gauff Form Prior to Indian Wells 2023
- Gauff vs Swiatek – lost – 4-6, 2-6
- Gauff vs Keys – won – 6-2, 7-5
- Gauff vs Rybakina – won – walkover
- Gauff vs Sasnovich – won – 6-0, 6-4
- Gauff vs Kudermetova – lost – 2-6, 6-3, 1-6
Gauff is fresh from reaching the semifinals on the hard courts of Dubai where she was beaten by the world number 1 Swiatek. Her only previous tournament after the round 4 exit of the 2023 Australian Open was in Doha. There Gauff beat veteran Kvitova before losing in the quarterfinals against the world number 11 Kudermetova in 3 sets.
All these results clearly show that Gauff is in fine form and she returns back on home soil full of confidence and ambition. Gauff’s heavy-hitting style of play is well-suited for the hard courts of America. Also, the youngster is celebrating her 19th birthday midway through Indian Wells so she will want to have reasons to feel cheerful.
Gauff Injury update: Totally fine
Gauff looked light on her feet and full of running in both tournaments she took part in February. She also played several exhibition matches in the build-up to Indian Wells and clearly, her fitness levels are where they should be at this time of the year.
Can Gauff Better Her 2022 Indian Wells Achievement
Back in the 2022 Indian Wells Coco Gauff exited the tournament exactly on her 18th birthday after a 3-6, 4-6 defeat against the multiple Grand Slam winner and ex-number 1 Simona Halep in a round of 16 matchup. Gauff accredited her defeat to the strong winds that affected her serve, but in reality, she was simply outsmarted by her much more experienced opponent. This was only Gauff’s second-ever main draw appearance at Indian Wells.
Considering Gauff’s solid form and kind draw we firmly believe that she will again be able to reach round 16 without too much bother. There she will likely face another top 10 in-form player in Belinda Bencic though and this promises to be a tough test. Still, we think Gauff is a much wiser player than she was a year ago and our prediction is that she will better her 2022 Indian Wells achievement by making it for the first time ever past the round of 16.
Gauff Indian Wells 2023 Prediction – quarterfinal
Gauff was drawn in the fourth quarter of the draw and after an easy ride is promised in her first match things get much tougher. Gauff got lucky though and with the world number 9 Bencic eliminated early she won’t have to face any top 50 players untiil the quarterfinal. That’s why we think she will easily reach that stage.
However, there she is likely to have a quarterfinal against the world number 2 and 2023 Australian Open champion Sabalenka. The Belarusian is one of the few players on the tour that can hit the ball harder than Gauff and that’s why we think the American’s run in this year’s Indian Wells will end at that stage.
