In the first qualifying round in Cincinnati, Popyrin defeated Ilya Ivashka 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. He is coming off a successful week as he won the Croatian Open in Umag. Popyrin defeated Stan Wawrinka in the final and previously went past Arnaldi, Prizmic, Ofner and Bonzi.
Among Popyrin’s better results this season is reaching the third round at the Australian Open where he defeated Chun Sing Tseng and Taylor Fritz before losing to Ben Shelton. Popyrin also made it to the round of 16 in Rome where he lost to Holger Rune.
Max Purcell
Purcell is 78th in the rankings and his career-high is No. 62. The 25-years-old is 43-17 for the season and 37-10 on hard.
He is coming off a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win in the first qualifying round against Luca Van Assche. Last week, Purcell reached the second round in Toronto where he lost to Andy Murray in three sets. Before that, he had an impressive straight sets win over Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Purcell has won three lower level tournaments this season in Pune, Bangalore and Chennai.
