Ronnie O’Sullivan was looking in good shape at the inaugural Wuhan Open in China, before crashing out heavily to Lyu Haotian in the quarter-finals. The Chinese player steadily pulled away to a 4-0 lead, leaving O’Sullivan unable to mount a fightback in a 5-1 loss.
His next challenge will be facing America’s Ahmed Elsayed in the qualifying round of this year’s Northern Ireland Open which runs from October 22-29th at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast.
What are the Rocket’s chances in the match?
The oddsmakers have Ronnie O’Sullivan as the strong odds-on match favourite for this duel. The Rocket has only lost two matches since September and while he has missed out on titles at the English Open and Wuhan Open, his form in general has been solid.
In opponent Ahmed Elsayed, O’Sullivan will face a player ranked outside the Top 120. Given that O’Sullivan hasn’t had any qualifying blips this season, this looks like a more than winnable challenge for him.
At the top tier of snooker, Ahmed Elsayed hasn’t won a match this year, losing all three played in the Championship League before suffering defeats in qualifiers for the European Masters, Wuhan Open, English Open and British Open.
So O’Sullivan looks to have a decent chance of progressing to the main draw of the 2023 Northern Ireland Open.
