NYCFC vs New York Red Bulls H2H – who is king of the Big Apple?

It has been a difficult season for New York’s MLS teams with both sides presenting losing records ahead of this showdown in Yankee Stadium on Saturday 16th September. The hosts began the season brightly at home but are currently outside of the playoff places. The visiting Red Bulls sit just one point behind with a game in hand, adding spice to an already tasty rivalry.

This saturday marks the 27th meeting between the sides in competitive play, since NYCFC arrived on the block in 2015. The match which kicks off at 15:30 local time, will be broadcast live around the world to fans.

NYCFC vs New York Red Bulls H2H

The story so far

The sides first met in 2015 at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, and it was a routine 2-0 victory for the more established New York Red Bulls. The star signings for the then new franchise, Andrea Pirlo, Frank Lampard and David Villa never celebrated together in the Hudson River derby. NYCFC finally got off the mark two years later when David Villa hit a hattrick to outscore Bradley Wright-Phillips in a 3-2 home win.

  • NYCFC wins: 8
  • Draws: 3
  • New York Red Bulls wins: 15

The home side have just a 31% win rate against the reds from across the river, but NYCFC can take heart that at home they do hold the upper hand. In either Yankee Stadium or Citi Field the Blues have won six times and only lost three in 10 matches. Two of the Red Bulls’ three victories on the road were in the “early years” in 2015 and 2016.

History in the making

This will be the third meeting between the sides in all-competitions in 2023 and New York Red Bulls have a 100% record so far, having won both previous matches 1-0. If they were to snatch a victory on the road on Saturday it would be the first time that a single franchise has beaten their arch-rival three times in the same year since NYCFC’s inaugural season in 2015 when the Metros also achieved the feat.

New York Red Bulls advanced to the US Open Cup semifinals with what on paper seemed a comfortable display, but they relied on two smart saves from Carlos Coronel to keep a clean sheet. The tension bubbled over at the end with Maxi Moralez and Tom Edwards clashing and being sent off.

NYCFC vs New York Red Bulls H2H: Final prediction

Although the Red Bulls won both meetings this year without conceding a goal, it is important to point out that those games were at the Red Bull Arena. On the road the Troy Lesene’s team have struggled, they are currently on a run of just one MLS away win in their last 15 matches. In contrast, NYCFC have had a tough season but still managed to be respectable at home, only losing three times in league action either at Yankee Stadium or Citi Field.

It is likely to be a well-fought game as recent battles have proven, NYCFC have tied more games (12) than any other MLS side this season, would be no surprise to see a 1-1 draw.
