Manchester United have submitted their retained list following the conclusion of the 2022-23 Premier League campaign. Manager Erik ten Hag has allowed seven players to depart Old Trafford, whilst new contracts have been offered elsewhere to other squad members.
It would be fair to say that none of those who are leaving can really be classed as key Manchester United players. Therefore, it opens up space and wages in the roster for ten Hag to add fresh faces to the group ahead of the upcoming campaign.
The goalkeeper department is one which is heavily involved in this retained list. The most notable news is that the club are still is discussions with goalkeeper David de Gea. The quote itself states ‘discussions remain open over a potential new contract’. That alone could suggest the club wish to keep him, although the word ‘open’ offers no guarantees.
Other goalkeeping news is that Tom Heaton and Nathan Bishop have had extensions triggered to keep them with the Premier League giants. They aren’t expected to challenge for the number one jersey anytime soon, and with other keeper Dean Henderson linked with a move away, this is an area of focus for ten Hag to really nail down.
Phil Jones, as has been mentioned before, will be leaving the club. He has barely featured for the club only the last few seasons, but he has been on the books at Manchester United for 12 years. In total, he made 229 appearances for the Red Devils. Axel Tuanzebe is also exiting after 37 first-team appearances. He ended last season on loan at Stoke City.
Ethan Galbraith and Di’Shon Bernard are two more individuals that have been their Manchester United career come to an end. They barely threatened the first-team picture during their time with the club, at least in terms of playing on a regular basis. In 2019, during a 2019 UEFA Europa League clash with Astana, the pair made their club debuts.
To conclude the seven that are moving on, Eric Hanbury, Charlie Wellens and Manni Norkett won’t be offered extensions and as such become free agents. They came from the Academy at Manchester United, and the club have stated they will support the trio in finding a professional contract elsewhere.
Manchester United: Will David de Gea stay?
If Manchester United did not want to keep him, then they would have announced him alongside the likes of Jones and Tuanzebe in leaving the club. The Spaniard is out of contract at Old Trafford, but they are open to extending this means the ball is now in the court of de Gea really. The 32-year-old joined the club from Atlético Madrid in 2011 for a reported £18.9million.
He has since gone on to make over 400 appearances for the club, but he did make headlines last season for some notable high-profile errors, including against Sevilla in the UEFA Europa League and West Ham United in the Premier League. Still, he does offer great experience, and it would appear ten Hag is open to him staying, meaning he make line up for them next season.
