LAFC vs Inter Miami head-to-head – Herons hoping to make history

LAFC vs Inter Miami face off on a Sunday evening game on the West Coast as the 2022 MLS Cup winners receive the 2023 Leagues Cup champions in what is going to be a cracking contest in California. Inter Miami are returning to the scene of their first ever game in the MLS, the BMO Stadium is where they made their bow in March 2020. The world has been transformed since then and so has the visiting club with just one player from that opening day – Robbie Robinson – still on the roster.

LAFC vs Inter Miami head-to-head record

This will mark only the third meeting between these sides and it is LAFC that have run out winners on both occasions while Inter Miami are yet to score a goal against their opponents. It has been almost 18 months since their last meeting and in that time both sides have picked up silverware and will feel they are the better side.

  • LAFC wins: 2
  • Draws: 0
  • Inter Miami wins: 0

Inter Miami 0-2 LAFC (12/03/2022)

This encounter was the Black and Gold’s first match outside of Los Angeles in the 2022 regular season, they were unbeaten and continued their good form with a comfortable win over Phil Neville’s side. The Ghanaian forward Kwadwo Opoku put the Californians ahead in the 45th minute and moments before the interval there was a red card for Brek Shea who pulled back his opponent Brian Rodríguez when he was clean through. Libyan international Ismael Tajouri doubled the lead in the 82nd minute in what was a routine win.

LAFC 1-0 Inter Miami (01/03/2020)

A huge moment for Miami and their fans who finally got to experience the thrill of an official MLS match after years of waiting for the franchise to be born. Carlos Vela was the party pooper, scoring just before halftime as the expansion team, then managed by Uruguayan Diego Alonso had to start life in the league with a defeat.

Inter Miami’s only other MLS game in The Golden State was when they faced San José Earthquakes last year. That was a happy trip out west because the Pink and Black picked up three points by virtue of winning 1-0. Brazilian midfielder Jean Mota was on target with a left-footed shot after 12 minutes to earn the win, Mota has recently returned from a serious injury and could feature in this game.

LAFC vs Inter Miami what to expect

Inter Miami have been on a great unbeaten run since Tata Martino took charge and Lionel Messi took the field. However, the BMO Stadium is tough place for anybody to go and LAFC have their own stars in Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini and Mexican speedster Carlos Vela. By no means will it be a comfortable outing for the Herons but it is possible that they finally get their first ever victory in this fixture.
