The United States Open, commonly known as the US Open, is about as big as it gets in golf. It’s undoubtedly one of the biggest events of the golfing year. It’s one of the four majors, alongside the PGA Championship, the Open Championship and the Masters. Naturally, the US Open is one the ultimate prize for any golfer.
Ever since 1985, the US Open has been a fixture on the golfing calendar. Typically hosted by some of the best courses that America has to offer, the US Open has been played at some of the most famous courses in the world, such as Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in New York, Baltusrol Golf Club in New Jersey, Oak Hill Country Club in New York, and the iconic Pebble Beach, located in California.
Where is the 2023 US Open being held?
This time around, the US Open will take place at Los Angeles Country Club, which can be found in Los Angeles in California. The US Open is back in the Golden State for the second time in three years, after the competition was held at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego back in 2021.
This will be the first time that Los Angeles Country Club has held this prestigious tournament, though it’s far from the first time that the tournament has visited the state of California.
Somewhat surprisingly, it took quite a long time for a course in California to host this famous old competition, over 50 years in fact. In 1948, the competition visited the state for the first time when it was held at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades. Since then, three other Californian venues have hosted the US Open. Olympic Club (San Francisco), Pebble Beach (Pebble Beach) and Torrey Pines (San Diego) are those three venues.
Future US Open Venues
We know that the US Open will be hosted at Los Angeles Country Club this year, and we also know where the competition is heading in years to come.
In 2024, the plan is for the US Open to return to North Carolina for the first time since 2014. On that occasion, Pinehurst Resort will host for the fourth time having held the competition in 2014, 2005 and 1999.
Following a trip to North Carolina, the US Open will be off to Oakmont in Pennsylvania, where recurring venue Oakmont Country Club will hold the event, having previously hosted in 2016, 2007, 1994, 1983, 1973, 1962, 1953 and 1927.
Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, which can be found in Shinnecock Hills, New York, will host the 2026 renewal of the US Open for the first time since 2018. In recent years, Shinnecock Hills has been another popular venue, hosting the tournament a total of four times since 1986. That wasn’t the first time that the competition visited that particular part of the United States, though, oh no. In fact, Shinnecock Hills Golf Club hosted the second ever renewal of the US Open, which took place all the way back in 1896. Plenty has changed in the game since those days, that’s for sure.
