Rory McIlroy may have gone nine years without winning a major golf tournament but that hasn’t stopped him from enjoying an extremely lucrative career. Ever since catching the eye as a teenager, when he won his first event as a professional in Dubai, the Northern Irishman has attracted a lot of commercial interest, too.

The combination of his golfing prowess and commercial gains means that McIlroy is one of the wealthiest athletes in the world and it’s only going to get better for him in the years to come. At the age of 34, McIlroy is in the prime of his life and barring any scandals or a complete drop off in form, he is set to make even more millions in the future.

How much has Rory McIlroy made from the PGA Tour?

As golf’s primary tour, Rory McIlroy has made the majority of his money through competitions on the PGA Tour. Throughout his career, he was on 23 events on the tour which makes him one of the most successful golfers in the modern era.

While there is no set prize money for each event, McIlroy has fared particularly well at the most lucrative events over the years which is a large reason why he is ranked second in the all-time earnings list on the PGA Tour. As of July 2023, McIlroy has earned $75,819,307 from his performances on the tour – roughly 45m dollars less than Tiger Woods in first.

Although Woods is way ahead as things stand, it isn’t inconceivable that McIlroy could overtake him on the earnings list one day. Prize money is only going to increase following the merger with LIV Golf and McIlroy still has at least a decade left at the highest level.

How much money has Rory McIlroy earned at the FedEx Cup?

The FedEx Cup has effectively been the “final” of the PGA Tour since 2007. The top 30 players on the PGA Tour from the season just gone play in the Tour Championship with the winner of the event taking home the prestigious trophy and a mammoth sum of cash.

McIlroy has won the event three times, which is more than any other golfer in history, which means he has earned a healthy amount from the competition. In total, he has earned over $40m through his FedEx Cup victories with his biggest individual payday coming in the 2022 event when he took home first prize.

How much money has Rory McIlroy earned on the DP World Tour

As a European golfer, McIlroy first made his name as a professional on the DP World Tour – formally known as the European Tour. His first victory came in the Dubai Desert Classic as a 19-year-old, an event he won once again earlier this year.

Although McIlroy focuses the majority of his attention, he does sometimes still show up at the odd DP World Tour event – providing the price is right. In fact, on occasion, he has even been given a hefty fee by organisers for even making an appearance.

Throughout his career on the DP World Tour, McIlroy has won 15 titles and is the highest earner in the tour’s history. To date, he has won $47,434,525 on the tour but that figure doesn’t include his Race to Dubai winnings – which stand at around $10m thanks to his four victories.

This means in total, throughout his golfing career to date across both the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, the current world number three has raked in around $170m. As he has been a professional for 15 years, this works out at an average of $36m per season.

How much money has McIlroy earned from sponsorships?

McIlory is an elite golfer, a big personality and a winner – the three ingredients which make him one of the most marketable athletes on the planet. The fact he is good friends with Tiger Woods has also helped his case over the years when it has come to securing big sponsorship deals.

Over the years, McIlroy has enjoyed deals with the likes of Oakley, Omega, TaylorMade and Nike. He was even once the face of EA Sports’ golf game, making him the only golfer aside from Tiger Woods to be featured on the front of their golf title.

His two biggest contracts at this moment in time are with TaylorMade and Nike. This means that McIlroy plays with TaylorMade golf clubs and is paid $10m a year by the golf giant for the privilege. That current contract was signed in 2017, meaning McIlroy may well be eying up a new deal in four years’ time.

His Nike contract means that McIlroy will only ever be seen wearing Nike clothing on the golf course. He is also paid $10m per year by Nike and that contract is also due to expire in 2017. Through a series of other deals, it is believed that McIlroy nets around $35m per season through sponsorships alone.
