Masters Day 3 prediction: Matchup (72-hole score)
Contents
The following Masters betting tip is a head-to-head matchup for the rest of the tournament.
Matsuyama over Fitzpatrick (20/27)
Hideki Matsuyama sits at 3-under par for the tournament in a T18, one stroke ahead of Matthew Fitzpatrick (2-under, T22).
The 2021 Masters Champion, Matsuyama knows his way around Augusta, and his game fits the course well. The eight-time PGA Tour winner has only gone over par twice in his last 13 rounds. He’s gone under par in six of them.
Matsuyama’s last three Masters
- 2022 (T14): 72, 69, 77, 72
- 2021 (1st): 69, 71, 65 73
- 2020 (T13): 68,68, 72, 72
Matsuyama has recorded six top-15 finishes in his last eight starts along with three top-10s. He’s only missed one cut in all 13 appearances and won the Silver Cup as the low amateur in 2011.
In eight showings at the Masters, Fitzpatrick has only finished once in the top 20.
Masters Results Since 2014
Player | 2014 | 2015 | 2016 | 2017 | 2018 | 2019 | 2020 | 2021 | 2022 |
Matsuyama | Cut | 5 | T7 | T11 | 19 | T32 | T13 | 1 | T14 |
Fitzpatrick | Cut | DNP | T7 | 32 | T38 | T21 | T46 | T34 | T14 |
Both golfers have participated in nine Masters together, and Matsuyama has only finished lower once in 2019.
The Ehime, Japan native, also dominates Fitzpatrick in form for the current year. Matsuyama has finished T29 or better, including two top 10s in five of his last seven events, with only two missed cuts.
In 2023, Fitzpatrick has four missed cuts and recorded just one top 10 in seven events.
At Augusta, Matsuyama owns a lower scoring average (71.55) by nearly a stroke compared to Fitzpatrick (72.40). He’s also shot under par in 47.6% of rounds compared to his counterpart (40%).
Through 26 holes played at the Masters, Matsuyama has only missed one fairway and ranks second in driving accuracy. He also ranks ninth in greens in regulation (77%).
The world No. 18 ranks higher than his English competitor in those two categories and as well as in putting.
We believe the 20/27 odds in favor of Matsuyama are extremely valuable due to his one-stroke advantage and good form.
Masters Day 3 Top 20 prediction (72-hole score)
The following top 20 prediction is for the finish position of the full event.
Patrick Reed to finish Top 20 (1/2)
One of the most polarizing figures in the game may be disliked by many fans for various reasons, but his game should be respected.
Reed is back near the top of the Masters leaderboard as he sits in a tie for 10th at 4-under par through 32 holes (four left in round 2).
The man formerly known as “Captain America,” due to his clutch Ryder Cup performances, shot an even par round of 72 Thursday and carded four birdies Friday.
The 2021 Masters winner has enjoyed a nice run of form at Augusta since his win in 2018. He’s made five-straight cuts and finished in the top 10 on three occasions.
Over the last three years, Reed has earned a top 20 in a major 6-of-11 times. He’s taken advantage of the par 5s this week and ranks fifth in the field in par 5 birdies (five).
Reed ranks 24th in both greens in regulation (72%) and putting (1.59 putts per hole). He’s also 25th in driving accuracy (hit 80% of fairways).
The LIV Tour may not have the strength of PGA Tour fields, but he’s played well by earning five top 5 finishes in 10 events. He also finished solo second at the European Tour’s Dubai Desert Classic (lost to Rory McIlroy by a stroke).
