Highlights from Round One

The following section contains the key moments and videos from the first round.

Wolff posts the joint lowest-ever LIV round and sits alone on top

It’s been a difficult season and an up-and-down few years for the former Oklahoma State product and golf prodigy. Wolff started the season strong with three-straight top 10s but endured a slump with four finishes of 41st or worse, along with a withdrawal.

The 24-year-old is a member of Smash GC and was publicly ripped by team captain Brooks Koepka last month. Wolff responded that he is trying his best and has had trouble with the mental side of the game.

On Friday, Wolff bounced back from his struggles, posted his lowest round of the campaign (61) and tied for the best single-round score in LIV history. His previous best was a 66. The Simi Valley, CA native recorded eight birdies and an eagle at the Greenbrier compared to just one bogey.

Wolff is trying to win for the first time since 2019 when he was victorious at the 3M Open (PGA Tour event) over Bryson DeChambeau and Collin Morikawa.

A group of superstars lurk in the distance

While the very top of the scoreboard might not be filled with big names, there are still 36 holes remaining, and a number of the world’s best lie in wait.

Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson and Talor Gooch all sit four strokes back at 5-under par thanks to rounds of 65. Phil Mickelson trails by six strokes after his 66.

The 6-time major winner birdied four-straight holes (9-12) to climb into contention. He is also attempting to claim his first title on LIV. Koepka, Johnson and Gooch (three LIV trophies) have all won at least twice on the Saudi-backed tour.

Varner and Puig share second place

Rounds of 63 from Varner and Puig moved them to 7-under right behind Wolff. The Akron, Ohio native Varner enjoyed a bogey-free round which featured five birdies (three in a row from holes 6-8) and an eagle on No. 17.

The highly touted Spaniard out of Arizona State, Puig, only has one top-five this season but has shown signs of improvement since May.

The former Eastern Carolina University standout, Varner, can take home his second LIV individual title in four starts should he triumph this week (won LIV DC on May 28).
