The 3M Open is set to take place this week at TPC Twin Cities in Minnesota. While the likes of Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy won’t be competing this week, due to its lack of designated status, there are still plenty of eye-catching stories on offer for those who have bought tickets for the event and those who are planning on watching at home.

After the final major tournament of the year came to a close last weekend at Royal Liverpool, the focus will now turn to the season-ending FedEx Cup which is fast approaching, and for European and US golfers – the Ryder Cup which takes place in September in Rome. With everyone in the field playing for something this week, here are some free tips and predictions for the 3M Open.

Best 3M Open tips and predictions

Tony Finau to win the tournament – 16/1

Tony Finau comes into the 2023 3M Open as one of the favourites due to a number of reasons. First of all, as the world number 19, he is the second-highest-ranked player in the field this week behind only Cameron Young who is placed just three places above him in the rankings.

Secondly, he has pedigree behind him as a six-time winner on the PGA Tour. The only other players in the field who have a significant number of wins to their name on the tour are Justin Thomas – who is in miserable form at the moment and Hideki Matsuyama – who hasn’t really threatened the top of the leaderboard all season.

Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, he is the defending champion at the 3M Open which shows how well-suited his game is to TPC Twin Cities. Last year he came from behind on the final day of the tournament to post a round of four-under-par which gave him the victory. In the end, he won by a total of three shots with Sungae Im – who is also in the field this week – finishing in second place.

There are a lot of things going in Finau’s favour this week, which makes us believe that he is the man to beat. At odds of 16/1, he could prove to be a steal very quickly.

Top European player – Sepp Straka – 4/1

After a couple of weeks on links golf courses in the United Kingdom, a lot of European players have declined to go straight back into action on the PGA Tour in the USA. Big names such as Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood and Jon Rahm are all sitting this one out which makes the top European market for this event relatively wide open.

While the likes of Ludvig Aberg and Aaron Rai are certainly in the conversation, we can’t look past Sepp Straka due to this sensational form of late. The 30-year-old has arguably never been in better form and is very much in contention for a spot in Europe’s Ryder Cup Team for the event in September.

The Austrian won the John Deere Classic three weeks ago by two shots thanks to a mammoth final round of nine-under-par. He then took that form with him into the Open Championship where he looked like the only player capable of applying any kind of pressure on Brian Harman over the final round. In the end, he finished in a tie for second meaning he has a win and a second-place finish in his last two events.

If he carries this momentum into the 3M Open then he will be thinking more about winning the tournament than simply being the top European.

Justin Thomas to miss the cut – 21/10

On talent, natural ability, and pedigree, there isn’t a player in this field that comes close to Justin Thomas. Under normal circumstances, he would be the outright favourite coming into this event due to the relatively weak field but these are far from normal times for the two-time major champion.

Thomas is a 15-time winner on the PGA Tour but is currently experiencing the worst run of form of his career. He is playing so badly that he is going to need to rely on a pick from Zach Johnson if he is to play in the Ryder Cup in September and you won’t find many people who would advocate for that at this moment in time.

Last week at the Open Championship, Thomas opened up with a horror show round of 82 and the worst thing about it was that it wasn’t a complete surprise. He has only finished in the top ten on three occasions all season and has missed the cut in four of his last six events.

Unless something drastic has happened in the past week then we can’t see anything other than another missed cut for JT.
