Friday had its share of surprises, as Ferrari, and especially Charles Leclerc, took the fight to the dominant Red Bulls. Can the Monegasque repeat his Friday performance on the Saturday sprint?
Verstappen to Win
Despite Leclerc’s pace on Friday, Red Bull still look like the best team overall. Verstappen narrowly missed out on pole for Sunday, while Perez wasn’t that far behind either. Under race conditions, we should take two things into account: first, Red Bull is still going to be faster on the long runs. Second, the RB19 is still the best car in the field on high speed sections, giving the Austrian team a massive advantage down the 2.2 km front straight – the track’s prime overtaking spot.
Even if Leclerc manages to repeat his Friday result and also scores pole for the Sprint race, Red Bull should still be considered the favorite for the win. Even a short, one-stint run like the Sprint race should still provides plenty of overtaking opportunities down the main straight. The two Red Bulls jumping to the top of the order feels inevitable, and Verstappen still has the edge in this intra-team fight.
Perez Top 2 Finish
Following the same logic mentioned above, Perez will probably be in the mix for the win. Verstappen still has the edge in pace over his teammate, but a second place finish is very much in the cards for the Mexican.
Despite Ferrari’s improved pace over a single lap, it’s difficult to imagine the Italian team going toe to toe against Red Bull in race conditions. In last year’s GP, Leclerc had to go on an alternate strategy in an attempt to beat the two Red Bulls, as Ferrari clearly did not have the same pace as its opponent on the long runs. Not having that alternative will make the task even harded, which in turn clears the way for a Red Bull 1-2.
