India vs Australia prediction and betting odds: ICC World Cup 2023

Hosts India will be in action for the first time in the 2023 World Cup as they take on the five-time winners Australia in the fifth game of this edition of the tournament. The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai will play host for this one.

Our top India vs Australia predictions

The possibility of India’s best batsman by current form, Shubham Gill, missing out of this one because of dengue could put a serious dent to their chances as they take on one of the pre-tournament favourites Australia.

First Free Tip: Australia to win: 25/19 (2.3)

While we would have gone with India as favourites too, the loss of Shubham Gill makes it that much difficult for the side. Add to the fact that they found a way to get past the Indian defences in the third of the three ODIs they played recently and the momentum could well be with Australia here.

Second Free Tip: Top Australia Bowler – Adam Zampa: 7/2 (4.5)

Zampa has picked up 30 wickets in ODIs against India since 2019, which is eight more than the next best Aussie bowler. He has gone for a few runs too, sure, in going for those runs he has managed to grab some easy wickets and that’s what we think could happen again.

IND vs AUS – They just played an ODI series

India and Australia were involved in an ODI series in the second half of last month which the former went on to win 2-1. Australia did change things around in the third ODI of that series by batting the hosts out of the contest.

India

While defeating India in India is a difficult task for any team, a lot will depend on how quickly they adapt to the potential loss of Gill. The other issue for India is the selection of the fifth bowler, with R Ashwin, Mohammad Shami and Shardul Thakur vying for that spot.

Australia

Australia have bolstered their middle-order by bringing in Marnus Labuschagne who has scored runs by the truck-load in ODIs since his return. Where Australia would need to re-look at their batting tactics is if their number three and four, Steven Smith and Labuschagne can up the ante.

India vs Australia h2h score

India doesn’t have the great head to head score with Australia having won 56 and lost 83 of the 149 matches they have played. Things have gotten closer between these two teams with India leading 11-10 on head to head since 2019.

Pitch report and weather conditions

Chennai’s weather is typically hot or hotter through most part of the year and while the maximum the temperature will rise up to is 33 degrees centigrade, the humidity can touch close to 80%.

Only four ODIs have been played at this ground over the last 10 years, with India winning and losing two. Interestingly, batting first hasn’t been such a bad idea here with teams winning three of those four matches after opting to bat first.
