Having gotten their campaign back on track, England will now look to drill home the advantage against Afghanistan when the two sides meet in the 13th game of the 2023 World Cup on Sunday, October 13.
Our top England vs Afghanistan predictions
Contents
England shouldn’t have a lot of trouble as is indicated by the 1/9 (1.11) odds for them to win this. Afghanistan are on an eight-match losing streak and it will take a mini-miracle for them to overcome the 13/2 (7.5) odds to break that hoodoo.
First Prediction: Top batsman – Dawid Malan: 4/1 (5.0)
Malan is coming off a brilliant knock of 140 against Bangladesh as he continued his excellent form in arguably what is his most favourite format. Expecting him to continue to drill home that advantage even while chasing what could be a lowish score in case they end up batting second.
Second Prediction: Top England bowler – Mark Wood: 7/2 (4.5)
England will look to unleash the pace of Mark Wood to soften the batsmen of a team which isn’t used to facing up to that kind of pace. If Wood, who has picked up just one wicket from the first two matches of this tournament, gets his rhythm right, we could see him run through this opposition.

ENG vs AFG – England hoping to swat struggling Afghanistan
Defending champions England did not have a lot of trouble overcoming Bangladesh in their previous round while Afghanistan were sent packing by India.
England
England’s real challenge will come at a later time but in a tournament where teams are already running away with their net run-rates (South Africa are at +2.36, New Zealand at +1.96 and India on +1.5), they will know the importance of winning this and doing that convincingly.
Afghanistan
Afghanistan weren’t serious contenders to make the semifinals but the manner in which they have started is a serious indicator about their lack of ODI pedigree. They need to do a lot better than they did in those losses to Bangladesh and India in their first two matches.
England vs Afghanistan h2h score
There have been two previous ODIs between these two teams and England have won them both. Both these matches came in World Cup cricket and resulted in crushing defeats for Afghanistan (by nine wickets and 150 runs respectively).
Pitch report and weather conditions
There have been two games played at this ground already and the pitch turned out to be a flat one in both. That India managed to restrict Afghanistan in the second of those was down to some high-quality bowling but the placid nature of the surface was there for all to see when India chased down 273 in 35 overs.
Temperatures are expected to touch 35 degrees centigrade but things could cool off in the evening leading to speculation that dew could play a part again.
