While Netherlands will look to take inspiration from the underdogs Afghanistan’s win over England, overcoming South Africa in Dharamsala could be a bridge too far for them. No surprises then that South Africa start off a 1/20 favourite (1.05) as compared to 11/1 (12.0) for a Dutch win.
First Prediction: Team of top batsman – South Africa: 4/9 (1.44)
This is a game expected to be played on a relatively spicy pitch and with weather being a concern too. In such conditions, an already struggling Netherlands batting might not survive too well against a lethal South African bowling attack.
Second Prediction: Top Netherlands batsman – Bas de Leede: 5/1 (6.0)
Batting could become easier as the ball loses its shine and that could make it easier for the middle-order to chip in. Bas de Leede has collected 85 runs from two matches and looks to be in some good touch to continue with that form.
SA vs NED – Can Netherlands get inspired by Afghanistan?
With the kind of start that South Africa have had, they have suddenly sprung in with a chance to make a run through to the semifinals here. That being said, this is a bit of a banana peel match having lost to Netherlands last year at the T20 World Cup.
When South Africa demolished Sri Lanka in their opener at Delhi, it was largely on expected lines.
However, when they crashed into the Australian party in the second match, there are those of us who have begun to take notice – the Proteas are suddenly one of the favourites to make the semifinals with famous cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle tweeting this:
Wow, South Africa, everything going right. One of the best batting sides of the tournament, fast bowlers fit and bowling well, fielding never an issue and a captain who seems to hold everything together. Can they dream?
— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) October 12, 2023
They did start the tournament off with a lot of hope but two defeats in two matches have left Netherlands with a lot to be done.
Their bowling has been a bit of a concern having conceded 286 and 322/7 in their two games but the bigger problem has been the batting as the batsmen have fallen apart very quickly.
South Africa vs Netherlands h2h score
There have been six previous ODI meetings between these two and South Africa have won every single time. What more, these have been pretty heavy defeats – 231 runs, 221 runs, 160 runs, 146 runs, 83 runs and eight wickets.
Pitch report and weather conditions
The last two matches played at this ground were both day games. This will be a night match that could make things interesting with the pitch expected to do a little bit for the bowlers under lights.
The outfield remains a concern with players expected to field within themselves as they look to avoid injury.
Rain has been forecast at around the start of the match, which could point to this being a rain-shortened encounter.
