- Lucknow Super Giants vs Mumbai Indians (LSG vs MI), Playoffs, Eliminator
- May 24, 2023 – 15:00 UK time.
- MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai
Pitch Report and Weather Conditions
As we saw on Tuesday, this venue very rarely prepares a high scoring pitch. We expect a two paced surface with a par score around 170.
The weather forecasters expect to see mainly clear skies with the odd bit of cloud cover in Chepauk on Wednesday evening. Humidity will be a factor throughout the game.
LSG vs MI – Match Predictions
Although Lucknow Super Giants have won each of their last three matches, we are backing Mumbai Indians to win this clash. Lucknow won their last game by only one run with Mumbai Indians thrashing Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets. Looking at the two likely XIs, we think that Mumbai Indians have more match-winners and are far superior in the batting department.
Our prediction: Mumbai Indians to win this match at 4/6 (1.67).
Only Kolkata Knight Riders have hit more sixes than Mumbai Indians so far in the tournament with the Indians averaging 8.86 maximums per game. Lucknow Super Giants sit in fifth place in the six hitting list and, although the likes of Quinton de Kock and Marcus Stoinis are extremely capable of hitting sixes, we are backing the powerful batting line-up at Mumbai Indians to clear the ropes the most in this game.
Our prediction: Mumbai Indians to hit most sixes in the match at 8/11 (1.73).
On a turning wicket in Chennai, we expect Piyush Chawla to maintain his impressive season. The experienced spinner dismissed Quinton de Kock with his first ball the last time these sides met and has caused problems to all teams this year.
Our prediction: Piyush Chawla to be Mumbai Indians’ highest wicket-taker at 3/1 (4.00).
Man of the Match
There certainly are some pretenders to the crown, with Shubman Gill, Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli making strong cases this year, but Suryakumar Yadav stands alone as the best T20 batter in world cricket over the last two years. He has the highest strike-rate of any batter who has scored more than 125 runs in this year’s tournament and he is our prediction to be the standout player in this match.
Our prediction: Suryakumar Yadav to be the Man of the Match at 6/1 (7.00).
LSG vs MI Preview
This contest is very crucial for both LSG and MI with the playoffs race coming closer to the finish line. Let’s take a look at two sides ahead of their encounter on Tuesday.
Lucknow Super Giants
After sitting out two-thirds of the group stage, Quinton de Kock finally got a place in the XI for Lucknow Super Giants towards the end of the first round. He is yet to make a really big score this season but continues to keep Kyle Mayers out of the team. With Mark Wood back in England, we do not expect to see any changes to Lucknow’s XI for this playoff clash.
Predicted XI: Karan Sharma, Quinton de Kock (wk), Prerak Mankad, Marcus Stoinis, Krunal Pandya (c), Ayush Badoni, Nicholas Pooran, Krishnappa Gowtham, Ravi Bishnoi, Naveen-ul-Haq, Yash Thakur
Mumbai Indians have been the success story of the second half of the tournament. They struggled for consistency in the early exchanges of the competition with analysts pointing towards the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and the sporadic availability of Jofra Archer. However, they are now flying with their attacking batting line-up particularly impressive.
Predicted XI: Ishan Kishan (wk), Rohit Sharma (c), Cameron Green, Suryakumar Yadav, Tim David, Nehal Wadhera, Chris Jordan, Piyush Chawla, Jason Behrendorff, Kumar Kartikeya, Akash Madhwal
