3/1 (4.00)

This time tomorrow, the T20 World Cup 2022 finalists will be known. India and England fight it out for the remaining spot in Semifinal Two, in what is expected to be an entertaining clash of between fiery batting line ups.
India have been the form team of this competition, dropping just the one match enroute to claiming the top spot in Group 2. With several star batsmen in strong form, and a typically reliable bowling attack, they are looking like the team to beat in this year’s World Cup. England, on the other hand, have spearheaded a transformation in attacking cricket over the past five years across all forms of the game, and will be eager to get some trophies in the cabinet to show for it.
We break down all of the best bets to make on this match, giving our predictions as well as all the necessary information to place some well-informed wagers.
India vs England Prediction
Contents
Bookies have a tight margin for the outright winner odds ahead of this match up, with India marginally ahead on 4/5 (1.80) compared to England’s 1/1 (2.00).
We tend to agree with the bookmakers’ assessment—this game will be close, but India should win it.
While both sides have deep, explosive batting line up, it’s hard to get past the fact that India has been such a well-oiled machine this tournament. Only one match did their batters misfire, and even then they made a respectable 133 runs. KL Rahul, Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav all have multiple half centuries at strike rates in the high 100s, and while the rest of their line up hasn’t produced the same consistency, the dangers of Rohit Sharma, Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant need no introduction.
England on the other hand, are yet to find the same consistency from their batters. While this also only caught them out in one match, they are largely untested so far having had their big match with Australia washed out. They could step up and surprise, but India are seeming the more likely side to progress.
Expect this one to be high scoring, with India winning a free-flowing affair.
Other India vs England Predictions
Regardless of who wins this match, there are some exciting proposition bets to be made. Here are some of the best bets we see in this semifinal:
Suryakumar Yadav to Be India’s Top Runscorer @ 3/1 (4.00)
Just when it seemed like Suryakumar Yadav couldn’t get any better as a T20 batsman, he’s taken his game to a whole new level this T20 World Cup.
Now ranked the No.1 T20 batsman in the world, Yadav has scored 51*, 68, 30 and 61* in his last four innings. One of these knocks, against South Africa, was particularly impressive as the next highest Indian score was 15, while Yadav accrued 68 runs. All of Yadav’s knocks have been at incredible strike rates as well, averaging just under two runs per ball.
With odds of 3/1 (4.00), it is an excellent punt to take that the world’s No.1 batsman will step up and perform yet again for his nation in this match.
Ben Stokes and Virat Kohli to Both Score Half Centuries @ 14/1 (13.00)
Cometh the hour, cometh the man. Or men, in this case.
Bookies are offering a prop bet for both of these ex-captains to rise to the occasion and strike big scores. Virat Kohli has already crossed the 50 run mark in three of his five innings this World Cup, finding a rich vein of form after struggling for the last few years with his batting. Ben Stokes, on the other hand, has stuttered his way through the World Cup so far. However, the Englishman is undeniably a big game player, and has a track record of defying the form books to perform when his country needs it most.
Considering the high return on this bet, there is a healthy element of risk. In spite of this, it seems like a reasonable conclusion that these two class players would step up when needed the most and score runs this Thursday.
India vs England Head to Head
Here’s a look at the rivalry between these two sides based on the numbers:
- India leads the T20 head to head with 12 wins to England’s 10
- England won the most recent meeting in July 2022 by 17 runs
- India lead the T20 World Cup head to head, with two wins against England’s one
Looking at these statistics, this is about as close as it gets when it comes to a T20 rivalry. India have the slight edge in head to head, both overall and in T20 World Cups, while England have momentum from winning their last encounter.
Interestingly, their previous match up was less than four months ago, and saw over 400 runs scored in the game, with England coming out on top.
Path to the Semifinals: How India and England Have Progressed
India: The Team to Beat this World Cup
The last fortnight has seen India execute a near flawless World Cup campaign.
They began with a tight win over Pakistan, chasing down 159 off the final ball of their innings with four wickets in hand. A comfortable win over the Netherlands then ensued where India piled on 179/2 and defended it with ease, before a wake up call occurred with South Africa claiming a five wicket win when India were unable to defend 133/9. First place in the group was then wrapped up with two solid wins over Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, with India batting first and reaching the 180s both times.
Qualifying as the top side in Group 2, India are the only team to reach eight points this World Cup, and are looking perfectly placed to go all the way this year.
England’s World Cup campaign has not been without its heart-stopping moments for fans.
This time last week, England had only won one game, having been upset by Ireland and with their match against Australia washed out. However, their opening win against Afghanistan was added to with two impressive victories to round out their group play, with England defeating group leaders New Zealand, and claiming maximum points against Sri Lanka in a potentially tricky game also.
England head into this game very much in the balance—the side that beat New Zealand looks like the real deal, while the team which lost to Ireland look like limp biscuits. Which team shows up against India for this semifinal is the big question.
