Big Bash League Teams 2022-2023: All about the BBL Squads

BBL12 has been running since December 13 and we still have another month of sixes, batting collapses, controversial catches and who knows, maybe some more attempted Mankads, before one of the big bash league teams is crowned the tournament winner in early February.

At the top of the table, Perth Scorchers and Sydney Thunder currently have a one point gap to Sydney Sixers in third, before Adelaide Strikers and Melbourne Renegades make up the middle positions.

In previous seasons we have seen some big bash league teams marooned at the bottom of the table, still looking for their first win after six or seven games, but this year there is no standout candidate for the wooden spoon with Melbourne Stars, Brisbane Heat and Hobart Hurricanes all with two wins under their belts and loitering around the bottom of the big bash league table.

Who have been the best performers on each team so far?

Adelaide Strikers

There were a few raised eyebrows when the Strikers signed Chris Lynn from Brisbane Heat ahead of this campaign. No one could argue with his 3000+ BBL runs, but his 215 runs at an average of 17.92 in 2021-22 suggested that the 32 year old was in permanent decline. However, Lynn has been a breath of fresh air for the Strikers and was the first player in the tournament to reach 260 runs this year.

With the ball, pace bowlers Henry Thornton (16 wickets) and Wes Agar (11 wickets) have both impressed for the Strikers. They are two of only three players in the competition to have taken 4+ wickets with a strike rate of under 10.

Brisbane Heat

Colin Munro was supposed to add some experience and runs at the top of the order for Brisbane Heat and, after a slow start, the New Zealander has really delivered over recent games. Whilst hitting 98 against Sydney Thunder in Match 19, Munro brought up 1000 BBL runs and he is averaging 33.29 at a strike rate of 146.54 in BBL12.

Michael Neser has averaged a wicket every 11.4 balls in the competition and only international call-ups have prevented him from adding to his tally of 10 dismissals. The bowling all-rounder took 4-32 in his first appearance and picked up the ninth BBL hat-trick in the process.

Hobart Hurricanes

It has been a strong season for Matthew Wade who continues to captain, keep wickets and deliver runs at a high strike rate for the Hurricanes. He has passed 50 in two of his five innings whilst performing to a high standard with the gloves and, after playing for two other big bash league teams, has felt at home with the Hurricanes from 2017 onwards.

Left-arm wrist spinner Patrick Dooley has been one of the breakthrough stars of the 2021-22 BBL. After previously playing in only two BBL fixtures, he has outbowled Pakistan’s Shadab Khan and taken wickets in all but one match.

Melbourne Renegades

From BBL02 onwards, Aaron Finch has appeared in every season and the former skipper seems to have found a new lease of life in this campaign. He had to give up the captaincy due to poor returns last year but has already posted two half-centuries and been far and away the Renegades’ most consistent batter in BBL12.

Bowling all-rounder Tom Rogers had a successful campaign for Hobart Hurricanes last season, with only three bowlers picking up more wickets than him. He has found another level at the Renegades with his big bash stats improving. Furthermore, he picked up his first BBL five-wicket haul in the Melbourne derby on January 3rd.

Melbourne Stars

English wicketkeeper-batter, Joe Clarke, enjoyed his first full season in the BBL last year and contributed five half-centuries for Melbourne Stars. Batting at the top of the order, he has outperformed homegrown players, Marcus Stoinis and Beau Webster, and made the first (and currently the only) century of this tournament in Match 4.

Another Englishman, left-arm pace bowler Luke Wood, has produced some excellent performances in his debut BBL season. So far in the campaign, he has taken 13 wickets and has dismissed more players than the more experienced trio of Adam Zampa (8 wickets), Nathan Coulter-Nile (7) and Trent Boult (7). With numbers like this, you can expect interest in him from plenty of big bash league teams in future seasons.

Perth Scorchers

The 2021-22 BBL Champions currently sit at the top of the big bash league table and 240 runs from Josh Inglis have played a huge role in the success. Equally, skipper Ashton Turner has been making valuable middle order runs with scores of 61, 9, 53 and 48* from his last four innings.

Jhye Richardson has been one of Australia’s most impressive bowlers over recent seasons and only untimely injuries have prevented the 26 year old from adding to his 36 international caps. In this campaign, he has combined figures of 15-187 from 27.4 overs.

Sydney Sixers

The Sixers have been the strongest team over the last four seasons of the BBL with back to back titles, one runners-up and one third place finish. In BBL12, in spite of not yet hitting top gear, they are only one point off the top two sides. Jordan Silk (182 runs), James Vince (167) and Josh Philippe (160) are their main run scorers although all three will be disappointed with their output so far.

With the ball, Sean Abbott continues to be a constant threat whenever it is BBL time! The all-time leading wicket taker has added another 10 dismissals to take him to 135 overall.

Sydney Thunder

It has been quite a rollercoaster of a season for Thunder so far who were bowled out for 15 in Match 5 but sit level on points with Perth Scorchers at the top of the big bash league table. England opener Alex Hales has turned out for four different big bash league teams. has lived every minute of the rollercoaster with two ducks as well as being the only player in this tournament to have hit three scores over 50.

Nathan McAndrew has taken at least one wicket in every one of his five appearances. The medium-fast bowler has picked up 11 wickets and is the third bowler, alongside Wes Agar and Henry Thornton, with a strike rate under 10.
