Australia vs Sri Lanka prediction and betting odds: ICC World Cup 2023

Australia and Sri Lanka will hope to notch up their first points on the board when they face off in the 14th game of the 2023 World Cup which will be played in Lucknow.

Our top Australia vs Sri Lanka predictions

In a match between two struggling sides, Australia start off a 1/3 (1.33) favourite to win this against a side that is struggling with the ball. But with batting second decidedly a lot easier, we could be looking at Sri Lanka’s chances in a chase.

First Prediction: Top Australia batsman – David Warner: 7/2 (4.5)

Warner’s been simmering at the top of the order without getting too many runs and it seems like it could be a matter of time before he explodes into something big.

In the last nine ODIs he has played, Warner has got a start in all and has just three scores of less than 20. Expecting him to slam a big one here against a less-than-sparkling bowling attack.

Second Prediction: First innings 100 – Yes: 6/5 (4.5)

Given the manner in which Sri Lanka has gone with the bat in the tournament (two scores of 300+) and the kind of batting that Australia possesses, it’s tough to not see a century in the first innings of the game irrespective of who bats first.

AUS vs SL – Can Australia overturn forgettable start?

It’s not just the two defeats from two matches – against India and South Africa – that will bother the five-time champions, it’s the crushing manner that will be a problem. Can Sri Lanka take advantage of that?

Australia

After falling to 199 all out in the first game of the tournament against India, Australia capitulated to 177 all out in the next against South Africa raising serious doubts about their chances in the tournament.

Against a struggling Sri Lankan side, it could be a good chance to get their campaign underway.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka were pumelled by South Africa at Delhi and then saw Pakistan chase down 345 easily by Sri Lanka in the second match. In both matches their batting stood out but the bowling has fallen away.

With captain Dasun Shanaka ruled out of the competition as well, new skipper Kusal Mendis will now hope he can translate his batting form into victories.

Australia vs Sri Lanka h2h score

Over a period between 1975 to now, these two teams have faced off 102 times and Australia leads 63-35. They have played each other just five times since the last World Cup and Sri Lanka has won three of them – all these matches came in a five-match series they played in June 2022.

Pitch report and weather conditions

In the first match played here at this World Cup, South Africa rode to a solid 311 for seven and then aided by the movement off the pitch, managed to bowl Australia out for 177. A lot could depend on the kind of pitch though with this stadium possessing surfaces made of red soil, black soil and a combination of both.

A high of 33 degrees centigrade might not sound a lot but overcast conditions and a humidity of 60% could make it feel a lot worse than that.
