Botafogo vs Flamengo is a hotly contested Brazilian derby, which has a rich history dating back over 100 years.  The recent games in the Clássico da Rivalidade have been fairly tight but Botafogo go into this match on a hot streak on their own turf winning all 11 Brasileirão home games to date. As fpr Flamengo, they currently sit fourth, and are fighting it out with arch rivals Fluminense for a Copa Libertadores spot.

Botafogo vs Flamengo predicted lineups and news

Botafogo were dumped out of the Copa Sudamericana in a heart-breaking game against Defensa y Justicia on Wednesday night, as they fell to a late Nico Fernández goal. Bruno Lage has been rotating his side heavily between the two competitions, which means many of those involved in midweek won’t play on Saturday night. Flamengo still also have the Copa do Brasil final ahead of them, as Jorge Sampaoli considers how to balance his team accordingly.

The Mengão’s last three away games in the competition have seen 11 goals overall, while Botafogo have been free-scoring at home of late, racking up 11 for themselves in three matches and conceding just twice. The success in front of goal has been shared around too, with nine different scorers in the last five home games.

Team news: Botafogo

The big news for Botafogo is that striker Tiquinho Soares trained with the team having shaken off an injury. He scored twice in the last meeting with Flamengo earlier in the year. However, Bruno Lage will wait until the last minute to decide if the forward starts.

Both Víctor Sá and Eduardo are back in the squad having not travelled to Argentina for the Sudamericana setback. The other doubt the Portuguese coach has is whether or not to start Paraguay’s Matías Segovia, who has been one of the most exciting players on the team but isn’t as tactically adept as Júnior Santos.

Botafogo predicted lineup: 4-3-3

Team news: Flamengo

A goalless draw against Internacional has sent Sampaoli back to the drawing board as he prepares to tinker with his team once again. The Argentinian coach has already lined up 34 different starting XIs in his short tenure at the Carioca club.

The suggestion is that Flamengo will employ a back three to try and dull Botafogo’s brilliance going forward, with Chilean Erick Pulgar joining Léo Pereira and Fabrício Bruno. Star forward Gabriel Barbosa hasn’t been training as a starter this week, his birthday celebrations on Wednesday were gatecrashed by some fans angry at recent results. Pedro has been preferred in that role and could get the nod. However, one big blow was the injury suffered by Giorgian De Arrascaeta in the 0-0 draw against Internacional. That’s because the Uruguayan winger has been on target for Flamengo in three of their last five Brazilian championship away matches.

Flamengo predicted lineup: 3-2-4-1
