Boca Juniors vs River Plate H2H: The story so far

Originally a rivalry raised on the class divide down by the docks in the south of the city, where Boca was formed by immigrant workers and River, the Millonarios, took on an English name to demonstrate superiority. Today the clubs have outgrown their origins, both are international icons that have formed world champions and this game has become a top tourist attraction.

It is the Blue and Gold side have the upper hand historically, but it will be the visitors that head into the game on better form. River Plate have lost just two of their last 11 league matches, Boca Juniors have one win in five with the Copa Libertadores their main focus.

  • Boca Juniors wins: 91
  • Draws: 83
  • River Plate wins: 85

Arguably the biggest encounter between these two didn’t take place in Argentina, the second leg of the 2018 Copa Libertadores Final was played in Madrid with River running out winners after extra time. Since then there have been five draws (two decided by penalty shootouts), and these two footballing giants have won three games each.

Boca Juniors vs River Plate final prediction

Boca Juniors enter the game after a draining Copa Libertadores semifinal first leg against Brazilian side Palmeiras. With the return leg in São Paulo just a few days after the superclásico, Jorge Almirón has to be careful how to use his players.

Veteran Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani probably won’t appear for example, having played the full ninety minutes on Thursday night. In contrast, River Plate are refreshed and Martin Demichelis has them playing good stuff of late. Salomón Rondón could give Boca’s fatigued defenders another physical session on Sunday.

The cup distraction could see the home side take their eye off the ball, but Almirón won’t allow his side to crumble. A typical tight but tasty affair awaits, River will relish the smash and grab opportunity. 0-1
