And so it begins. Top-tier athletics action is once again on our screens. Today, the 2023 renewal of the World Athletics Championships gets underway in Budapest, Hungary.

The first day of a major athletics tournament is always a busy one, so you can expect the action to come thick and fast on day one. Below is the full schedule for the first day of the 2023 World Athletics Championships.

All times are displayed in local time, which will be EST. EST is exactly one hour ahead of British Summer Time (BST).

Day 1 Morning Session

08:50 – Men’s 20 Kilometres Race Walk

10:30 – Men’s Shot Put (Qualification)

10:35 – Women’s 100 Metres Hurdles (Heptathlon)

11:05 – Mixed 4×400 Metres Relay (Heats)

11:35 – Men’s 3000 Metres Steeplechase (Heats)

11:45 – Women’s High Jump (Heptathlon)

12:00 – Men’s Hammer Throw (Qualification Group A)

12:25 – Women’s Long Jump (Qualification)

12:35 – Men’s 100 Metres (Preliminary Round)

13:15 – Women’s 1500 Metres (Heats)

13:40 – Men’s Hammer Throw (Qualification Group B)

Day 1 Afternoon Session

19:02 – Men’s 1500 Metres (Heats)

19:05 – Women’s Shot Put (Heptathlon)

19:10 – Men’s Discus Throw (Qualification Group A)

19:35 – Men’s Triple Jump (Qualification)

19:43 – Men’s 100 Metres (Heats)

20:30 – Women’s 200 Metres (Heptathlon)

20:35 – Men’s Shot Put (Final)

20:40 – Men’s Discus Throw (Qualification Group B)

20:55 – Women’s 10,000 Metres (Final)

21:47 – Mixed 4×400 Metres Relay (Final)

Day 1 TV Schedule

Viewers in the UK will be able to watch all of the action on the first day of the 2023 World Athletics Championships by tuning into BBC. At various times, the action will be spread across BBC One, BBC Two and BBC Three, while for the die-hard fans who just can’t get enough, more action is available via the BBC Red Button.

Here are the full TV timings for day one:

Saturday 19th August

BBC Two: 9:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

BBC Two: 5:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.

It is worth noting that if for whatever reason you cannot tune into the action live, then there’s no need to worry, as there will be highlights of each day’s action shown on BBC Three. The highlight showings will begin on Monday 21st August and will run daily for the remainder of the competition. The highlights will be shown at 9:00 p.m. each night.

If you cannot get to a television or prefer to stream the action live online, then your best bet will be to visit the BBC Sport website. Anything that is live on one of the BBC TV channels will also be live on the BBC Sport website. All of the live coverage will naturally be available to view via BBC iPlayer too.
