World Athletics Championship Results of the Day 19/08/2023

The opening day of the 2023 World Athletics Championships has come and gone, but what a first day it was. Treacherous weather didn’t exactly make for premium athletics conditions as the competition got underway in the Hungarian capital, but that wasn’t enough to prevent some of the world’s best performers from putting on a show.

The day started in dark and damp fashion, and while the weather barely improved, the athletics simply got better and better as the day wore on, before culminating in an electrifying buzz ringing around Budapest’s Nemzeti Atlétikai Központ, which served as the scene for Ryan Crouser’s new championship record in the shot put final, not to mention USA’s world record time in the mixed 4x400m.

The Americans weren’t the only athletes jumping for joy on day one, oh no. The Ethiopians were always likely to have a big say what with the Women’s 10,000m taking place, and have a big say they did, stealing the show completely with a clean sweep as Gudaf Tsegay, Letesenbet Gidey and Ejgayehu Taye ensured that all three medals went back to Ethiopia.

It wasn’t all celebrations, though, and while one sizable favourite in the form of Ryan Crouser triumphed, another in the form of Siffan Hassan failed to make the desired impact, missing out on a medal in the 10,000m.
