Wales, who became the first team to qualify from Pool C after they swept Australia aside in spectacular fashion, have no time to rest on their laurels, with a fixture on the horizon against a Georgia side who defeated them in Cardiff the last time they played.
Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes will be the colosseum for this colossal clash of gladiators with one side eager for redemption and the other eager for another historic upset.
Wales vs Georgia match predictions
Contents
These two teams have drastically contrasting form entering this match and if the tournament so far is anything to go by, then it should be a comfortable win for Wales, however, Rugby World Cup’s don’t obey form guides and Georgia are no push-over.
Georgia to win with a +17.5 point handicap @ 10/11 (1.90)
Judging by their last fixture, which was only last year, these odds seem generous to Wales. Despite being in far better form at the Rugby World Cup than they have been for a couple of years, they will no doubt have one eye on the quarter-final date they have booked.
Georgia also seem to be improving and growing into the tournament, after two disappointing performances to start and a much improved one last week. Wales will win and it may not be too close but Georgia will keep the deficit below 18.
George North to score the first try @ 10/1 (11.0)
Many were sceptical of Warren Gatland’s bold choice to switch star winger George North into outside centre a few years ago during his first stint as Wales’ head coach. North struggled at first and the move was heavily criticised through Wayne Pivac’s reign, however, somewhere along the way something clicked and, arguably, George North is playing the best rugby of his career at Rugby World cup 2023.
The Osprey is a balanced runner with power and finesse and show-cased all of his offensive threat against Fiji in round one of the tournament in a stunning performances, collecting a try a long the way. That try took his tally to a remarkable 34 tries in 83 international caps for Wales and he doesn’t look like stopping now. Look for him popping up on Nick Tompkins’ shoulder and crashing over for an early score.
Wales vs Georgia preview
While this is not a must-win for either side, there is no doubt both will leave their all on the field in pursuit of valuable bragging rights.
Wales
Wales have far exceeded everyone’s expectations at Rugby World Cup 2023 thus far, beating a strong Fiji team 32-26, overcoming a significant Portugal challenge, 28-8 and dismantling Australia 40-6. They will be very excited for a quarter-final they didn’t expect to be in and the possibility of a stunning run to the final four.
Though they have already qualified from the group, they need at least a draw from their game versus Georgia to ensure top spot in the group, if Fiji beat Portugal.
Georgia
Georgia entered Rugby World Cup 2023 expecting to upset one of the three tier one nations in their group and are now down to their last opportunity with no success. They were extremely disappointing against Australia and against Portugal, who they’ve beat on fifteen of their last eighteen fixtures. Their performance versus Fiji was much more encouraging, however, after leading for much of the game, they probably should have finished the job.
Their win over Wales in 2022 was what really kick-started their hype train and so they will look to draw on that energy to achieve the most unlikely of back-to-back wins.
