Here’s why we suggest these Rugby World Cup predictions today:
Scotland to win by 1-12 against Tonga @ 10/3 (4.33)
Kicking off the Rugby World Cup action this Sunday, Scotland and Tonga face off in what is shaping up to be a juicy encounter. Both have played just the one match each, and while neither came away victorious, there was a lot to like from each of their defeats. Scotland ran South Africa close for the best part of an hour before the defending champions pulled away to win by 15 points, while Tonga weren’t quite so close on the scoreboard against Ireland, but still showed up the world No 1 side in several areas, around the breakdown and at scrum time.
We say that given how well both sides have performed, this will be a tight clash in Pool B. Expect Scotland to have better fitness and composure to come away with the victory, but by no means will this one be a blow out. With the likes of Vaea Fifita, Augustine Pulu, Malachi Fekitoa and Charles Piutau fronting up for Tonga, they have the star power to bust open this Scottish side. Across the course of 80 minutes Scotland will have the more consistent game, but there’s every chance this one goes down to the wire.

Wales to defeat Australia @ 10/11 (1.95)
This is one of the toughest matches to call in the tournament so far, but on balance, Wales have looked the better side this World Cup. Far from perfect, they did manage to come away with the result against Fiji, and get the job done over Portugal too. Australia, on the other hand, were well and truly exposed by Fiji last week.
What’s more concerning, is Eddie Jones has yet again changed his first-five, putting Carter Gordon on the bench and bringing Ben Donaldson into pivot. It’s bad enough that Jones has selected only one out-and-out five-eighth, and an inexperienced one at that; let alone the fact that he hasn’t stuck with him, and is now switching up the lineup. Expect Australia to be too disjointed to come up with a big result here, and for Wales to seal their spot in the quarter-finals with a win.
Expect this clash to be high scoring, too. The last time these two sides met, they were both playing woeful rugby, yet managed to throw the ball around and combine for a 73 point match. Australia will know they require a big win here in order to keep their hopes alive, so there’s every chance they’ll come out playing risky rugby to score tries–opening up opportunities at both ends of the field for points.
