Dallas Mavericks to Cover the Spread (+5)
We’ve seen last season what Luka Doncic can do when things matter the most. The Mavericks were able to surprise Clippers even without Porzingis and snatch a couple of wins in the series.
We aren’t sure that the Mavericks can win the series this year either, but they will certainly get some wins and play some close games. With that in mind, we expect the Mavericks to cover the spread in the first game in Los Angeles since they are healthy and more experienced than last year. In addition to this, Dallas has beaten the Clippers twice this season, and lost one match by 10 points.
Over 219 Total Points
Los Angeles Clippers certainly have the potential to play great defense when all of their players are available, which will be the case in the first game of the series against the Dallas Mavericks. However, it’s been the Mavs in all three games against the Clippers this season that impressed with their defense, but we don’t think that will be the case in the playoffs.
All in all, one of our predictions is to see a high-scoring game since Luka Doncic has enough creativity to drive the Mavs’ offense against the Clippers, while the Clippers have enough firepower all around to put up big scoring numbers as well.
Luka Doncic to Have Double-Double
The Slovenian wunderkind is a constant triple-double threat, although he didn’t have as many triple-doubles as we expected this season after stopping at eleven. The situation with double-doubles is a bit better since he had 26 double-doubles in 66 games.
While these numbers may not be encouraging, we have seen that Doncic has another gear in him for the most important matches. The Slovenian nearly averaged a double-double last season in the playoffs since he had 31.0 points per game and 9.8 rebounds per game. Add 8.7 assist per game to that and you can see why Doncic having a double-double is one of our top predictions in the first Clippers vs Mavericks game.
Los Angeles Clippers vs Dallas Mavericks preview – Can the Mavericks put up a fight once again?
Even though the Clippers eliminated the Mavs from the playoffs last season, it was much tougher than everybody expected and it proved to be a premonition of bad things to come for the Clippers.
So, let’s take a closer look at the teams now and what we can expect from the Clippers vs Mavericks game:
Los Angeles Clippers
The Clippers have been in the fight for the third seed in the Western Conference with Denver Nuggets until the end but a poor 4-6 record in the last 10 games made them finish fourth despite having the same overall record as the Nuggets (47-25).
The team has been without Serge Ibaka for most of the season, but the experienced center came back in the last few games, so he will be ready for the playoffs. Other players, including Kawhi Leonard, have also missed games during the season, which probably cost the Clippers a few games. In any case, the main question remains whether the Clippers can do better than last season in the playoffs when they were eliminated by Nuggets in the Western Conference semi-finals.
The good news for the Clippers is that they have a clean bill of health ahead of the series, so we will probably see their main stars playing heavy minutes.
The Mavericks have gone 7-3 in their last 10 games of the season to claim the fifth seed and avoid the play-in games even though they’ve finished the season with 42-30, the same record as the Trail Blazers and the Lakers.
The team has reasons to be optimistic ahead of the Clippers series since they’ve shown last year that they can put up a fight. They have more experience now and a healthy Kristaps Porzingis, so we could be in for a very exciting matchup.
Like the Clippers, the Mavs are also healthy at the moment. The only question is whether JJ Redick and Maxi Kleber will be able to take the floor, but they are both game-time decisions and we expect them to suit up for the first game in Los Angeles.
