Held annually in the middle of April, the prestigious WTA Stuttgart also known as the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix is upon us. The indoor clay court event courts the top talents on the women’s tour and this time is no different.
Nine of the top ten WTA-ranked stars will grace the Porsche Arena for silverware and raking points. With a Porsche Taycan Turbo S also in the mix for the winner, it promises to have exciting battles on the court.
WTA Stuttgart has a rich history, dating back to 1978. Some of the greatest players of all time, such as Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams have graced it over the years. Only seven players have defended their title and world number 1 Iga Swiatek will be wanting to put her name in the mix.
While Swiatek etched her name on the honour roll, Aryna Sabalenka found herself short of the grand prize. She had made to the final for the second successive time and was on the losing end on both occasions.
It was Australian Ashleigh who beat her in a thrilling three-set final, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3. In doing so, Barty became the first player to win both singles and doubles titles in the same year since Lindsay Davenport in 2001. She has not graced the court since the Australian Open but we are not short on quality despite her absence.

The Polish star continues her reign at the top of the WTA rankings. She has already added the WTA Doha to her glowing resume and will hope to add further shine to it with the defence of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix title. At the Sunshine Double, she impressed in California and Florida, making to the semi-finals in both events.
Aryana Sabalenka
The world number 2 etched her name in the record books with her Australian Open triumph. She beat Elena Rybakina to stake her claim as one of the best in the world and will have her eyes set on the WTA Stuttgart crown. She has made it to the finals in the last two editions but finished as runner-up on both occasions.
Ons Jabeur
The Tunisian ace has not had a good run on the WTA tour. She had starts and stops, failing to string together more than a single win. That changed in the Charleston Open, where she ran through her opponents to land the crown. The green clay event has given her the perfect preparation for this indoor clay event and she will be a force to reckon with.
Caroline Garcia
It has been a season of near misses for Caroline Garcia. She has come close to going unbeaten in competitions but failed at the final hurdle. Alycia Parks denied her WTA Lyon while Donna Vekic stood in her way in WTA Monterrey. She makes the trip to Stuttgart after helping France dominate the UK in the Billie Jean King Cup and will have to make a quick transition to clay court following her success on indoor hard courts.
Coco Gauff
The 19-year-old continues to impress on the WTA circuit. Belying her age, she continues to impress. She added the WTA Auckland title to start the year and has shown signs of breaking away from the competition in Dubai and Indian Wells. She has work cut out for her at the Porsche Arena and needs to rise to the occasion against much-fancied rivals.
Elena Rybakina
The world number seven remains the grim reaper on the WTA tour. Everyone but Sabalenka bowed to her at the Australian Open. Even then she did not go down before a fight. She avenged her final defeat at Indian Wells, where she beat Sabalenka in straight sets in the final. The Sunshine Double was kind to her as she was in the final of the Miami Open as well but could not overcome Petra Kvitova.
Emma Raducanu
The 2021 US Open champion has not been playing at her best as injuries continue to haunt her. She has given hints of the ability that saw her triumph at Flushing Meadows but consistency eludes her. Radcanu is one of the four wild card entries at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix and the one to keep an eye out for. She forwent Billie Jean King Cup participation with Team Britain for this event and is gunning to give her best here.
