As you likely know, the 2022 WTA Rome Masters is currently underway – at the exact same time as the men’s event. And just like the ATP Tour, this is the final Masters event before Roland Garros. Needless to say, the event is extremely important for many different reasons. Having taken a look at the draw, there are quite a few interesting prospects that I’d like to get through too.
So without further ado, let me get the ball rolling and start looking at the 2022 WTA Rome Masters right now.
WTA Rome Masters 2022 – All You Need to Know
Contents
The Rome Masters tournament is full of the world’s best players, as expected. And of course, there are certain players you should be looking out for, certain matches that could prove to be very interesting, and so much more to get through here. So let me get started right now:
Most Likely Winner of the Rome Masters
After missing the Madrid Masters through illness, Iga Swiatek returns to the WTA Tour to compete in the Rome Masters. Currently, Swiatek is the number one player in the world following the shock retirement announcement of Ash Barty. But while Swiatek moved to take the number one spot by default, she has certainly backed this new ranking up. Swiatek heads into the Rome Masters with a 23-match win streak. And in case you’d forgotten, she won this tournament last year by beating Pliskova by a score of 6-0 6-0!
So just to confirm, I firmly expect that Iga Swiatek will win the 2022 Rome Masters.
Other Key Players to Lookout For
While there is obviously a ton of hype about the level of tennis that Swiatek is playing, there are other great players also in the draw. In the main draw, you’ve got players like Maria Sakkari – the current world number 4 and a fantastic clay court player. For me, she is a potential contender for the title. We’ve also got Ons Jabeur competing, and she has recently won the Madrid Masters last week, so she’s obviously in great form.
But in addition to these two, other key players include Badosa (the world number three), Pliskova (last year’s finalist), Simona Halep (previous French Open winner in 2018), and many others. The women’s draw is pretty open in all honesty, and as the week progresses, we could see some very interesting results come through. This brings me to my final point.
Exciting Potential Matchups
As stated above, the draw is certainly pretty interesting for the WTA Rome Masters 2022. And having analyzed the draw, I’ve got some exciting prospects to note. Firstly, there is the potential for Swiatek to play Azarenka in the round of 16. The two played three sets in the Australian Open, which could make this pretty interesting. And there is also Samsonova in the top half. She’s the only player to take Swiatek to three sets in her last 10 matches.
I’m also intrigued about the first-round clash between Coco Gauff and Angelique Kerber – youth vs experience! This is a space that I shall be watching closely. And key matches will be covered as and when they present themselves.
