I’ve taken a close look at the draw for the women’s singles at the Italian Open. And while yes, there are some names that clearly stand out as potential title contenders, a few others could definitely go far. It’s the latter that I’d like to now discuss concerning the 2023 Italian Open, so do take note of the following three players:
Paula Badosa
I was seriously impressed with Paula Badosa at the Madrid Open this year. Of course, this tournament took place just a week or two ago, and Badosa was on fire at times. She proved to us all why she was once ranked number 2 in the WTA rankings. And as we approach her first match in Rome, she must be feeling confident with her game. However, she has a tough opener against Ons Jabeur, so this will be a real test right off the bat.
Yet Jabeur withdrew from the Madrid Open due to injury just two weeks back, so Badosa could capitalize on this.
Anett Kontaveit
Anett Kontaveit is another player who has been ranked as high as number 2 in the world. With that said, due to a lengthy injury that she has only just returned from, she isn’t seeded for the Italian Open. This means that she must now play a seeded player in the 2nd round, which comes in the form of Samsonova. I believe that this is a winnable match for Kontaveit, especially given her performance in the first round.
But she will need to come out firing if she is to upset the 16th seed.
Camila Giorgi
Last but not least, I’m picking Camila Giorgi as a key underdog at the Italian Open. Of course, this is her home tournament, so she will have some added motivation to keep fighting in this event. However, she has had a few injury concerns in recent weeks. Yet if she is feeling okay for this tournament, as she seemed to be in her opening match, she could blast her way deep into the draw this year.
