At the time of writing, we’ve enjoyed two full days of the Wimbledon 2022 tournament. And already, several top players have been beaten! This is true for both the men’s and women’s tournaments. Of course, it’s always a shock when a top player loses in the opening round, but it happens. Since I am eager to keep everyone updated on the top stories for Wimbledon this year, I’ve chosen to focus on the most surprising Wimbledon 2022 results so far.
It’s hard to believe that so many top players have bowed out already. However, Wimbledon is one of those events where seeds can drop early. The grass courts aren’t for everyone, as we all know. And below, you’ll see some details relating to the most surprising results over the last 48 hours.
Seeds Dropping Like Flies – Wimbledon 2022 Results for Round One
Contents
As stressed previously, we have only just seen the completion of round one in both men’s and women’s singles draws. Despite that, some of the biggest and most promising names in these draws have exited the tournament. On that note, I’ve shortlisted four of the most surprising results from round one right here:
Auger-Aliassime – Seed 6
Amazingly, I had Auger-Aliassime down as one of the potential underdogs to win Wimbledon 2022. But he lost in the opening round to the big-hitting Cressy. Last year, Auger-Aliassime made the quarter-finals of Wimbledon. So of course, this is a huge shock for many, even if Cressy had been playing well recently. I felt that Felix had been fulfilling his potential in recent times too, especially after his five-setter with Nadal at the French Open.
Maia Haddad – Seed 23
Maia Haddad, the promising Brazilian is another victim of the round one games. She had actually enjoyed one of the best grass-court spells of all the ladies going into the Wimbledon Championships. She won the Nottingham Open, made the finals of the Birmingham Classic, and lost in the semi-finals of Eastbourne International. Then again, form doesn’t always guarantee results, and she lost against Kaja Juvan in three sets.
Hubert Hurkacz – Seed 7
Back to the men’s event again, Hubert Hurkacz has also lost his opening match to Davidovich Fokina. For me, this was one of the most entertaining matches of the tournament so far. He fought hard to come back from 2-0 down in sets to level the match. But ultimately, Davidovich Fokina took him down in a fifth-set breaker. Bear in mind that Hurkacz was a semi-finalist last year, beating Federer en route. So for me, of all the Wimbledon 2022 results so far, this is probably the most shocking.
Danielle Collins – Seed 7
I know that Collins hadn’t been playing a ton since the French Open, but still, she’s one of the top players in the world. So the fact that she has lost to a player who is ranked outside of the top 60 is a major upset. And at the same time, it is always a huge surprise when a top 10 player loses in the opening round of any event.
