The 2021 Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini has arrived in London, but his participation in the tournament is still questionable. The Italian is struggling with an abdominal injury and has played only one match in the last two and a half months. That totals 17 matches for him this season which is much less than he usually plays by this point of the year.
Will Berrettini Play at Wimbledon?

Berrettini’s name was part of the Wimbledon draw on Friday afternoon. He is set to play his fellow Italian Lorenzo Sonego in the opening round. Interestingly, these two met in Berrettini’s last match in Stuttgart on June 12, when he won only three games.
Berrettini has been practicing for the last couple of days in Wimbledon, but from what we saw in a short video, he is not on the desirable level to compete. Many fans of the Italian are worried that he will have to withdraw for the season straight season.
It is safe to predict that Berrettini will withdraw from the tournament if he is not on a competitive level, but we will get the answer to this question no later than Sunday.

How Was Berrettini’s Season So Far?
As mentioned above, Berrettini saw limited action this season. He has a 9-8 record for the season and has been struggling with an abdominal injury since the Monte Carlo Masters. There he defeated Francisco Cerundolo in the second round and withdrew before the round of 16 match against Holger Rune.
That wasn’t his only recent injury, as he hurt his left ankle near the end of the last season. He started strong in January, playing five matches at the United Cup and winning three of them.
Berrettini suffered a heartbreaking loss in the opening round of the Australian Open to Andy Murray in five sets. He took a month and a half off after Melbourne and played in Acapulco at the beginning of March. He reached the quarterfinals there but withdrew after losing seven straight games against Rune.
That was the beginning of the problems for Berrettini, who pulled off numerous tournaments ever since. He missed his second consecutive Roland Garros, and his last withdrawal was last week in Eastbourne. Berrettini was back-to-back champion at the Eastbourne International tournament, but the injury did not allow him to go for a three-peat.
Berrettini’s History at Wimbledon
Berrettini has a 10-3 record in his three previous Wimbledon appearances. His most memorable one was in 2021 when he reached the final against Novak Djokovic. The Italian took the opener but failed in the next three sets for Djokovic victory – 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.
In 2019, Berrettini reached the round of 16, where he lost to Roger Federer in straight sets. In 2018, Berrettini made his Wimbledon debut defeating Jack Sock in five sets but then lost to Gilles Simon in the second round.
