These odds from Ladbrokes were correct at the time of writing.
Pospisil vs Auger-Aliassime – Match Predictions
It goes without saying that Felix Auger-Aliassime is heavily favoured to advance to the second round here. Vasek Pospisil is down at 94 in the rankings and he hasn’t exactly done much in the way of Grand Slam tennis in recent times. In contrast, Auger-Aliassime is a top 10 player – number 7, to be exact. And he is in a position where he is competing for Grand Slam titles.
This is totally different from Pospisil’s current position on the ATP Tour. With that said, interestingly, these guys teamed up to help Canada lift the Davis Cup crown at the back end of 2022. However, Pospisil was mainly selected to play doubles in this event, whereas Auger-Aliassime was the number one pick for singles. Of course, since this opening round is a singles match, Auger-Aliassime is expected to win.
Adding to that, Pospisil has lost in the qualifying rounds of both of the warm-up events played in Adelaide. He won just one singles match over the course of these two tournaments. So it would also be fair to say that Pospisil is struggling to find form on the singles court. Therefore, we’ve created the following predictions for the match:
Over 34.5 Games
While this is a mismatch on paper really, matches are always tastier when they involve two guys from the same nation. Also, Vasek Pospisil still has one of the best serves in the game. So we would expect that at least one of the sets played would go to a tie-break. And really, it would be surprising if Auger-Aliassime was to break Pospisil more than once in a set. That’s why we’ve gone with this prediction.
Pospisil to Win a Set
This is a more ambitious prediction than the first one. But again, thanks to the serve and the big game in general, it’s not impossible for Pospisil to snag a set here. All he has to do is make it to a breaker and play a solid seven points for this to come true. Of course, he might also sneak a break in one of the sets and hold on to pull this market through.
Pospisil vs Auger-Aliassime Preview
Before you jump ahead and lock in the predictions shown above, let us give you a preview for both of these guys:
Vasek Pospisil Preview
At 32 years of age, Pospisil is obviously a very experienced player. He has made the third round of the Australian Open in the past too. So it’s not like this is his first rodeo. However, his ranking of 94 does reflect his form at the moment. Furthermore, he’s lost in the first round of the Australian Open in four of his seven main draw appearances.
Felix Auger-Aliassime Preview
Specifically for this tournament, Auger-Aliassime has already bested Pospisil in just three appearances. Last year, Auger-Aliassime made the quarter-finals, and he will no doubt be hoping to do better than that in 2023. Of course, the fact that he is ranked 7 in the ATP rankings shows how talented he is too.
Pospisil vs Auger-Aliassime Head to Head
These guys have played each other four times in the past. Auger-Aliassime has a 3-1 head-to-head advantage over Pospisil too. Two out of these three wins for Auger-Aliassime were also played on outdoor hard courts. So this bodes well for him ahead of this match.
